Mental health legislative provisions in Nova Scotia are contained in the Hospitals Act, which came into force in 1979. Significant changes in mental health practices since that time have led to formation of a review committee that has been working to create a stand-alone mental health statute to be called the Mental Health Act. This discussion paper is limited to a review of mental health provisions for civil committal. It details those issues that the committee reviewed and outlines its recommendations. Part I covers the topic of guiding principles. Part II explores specific issues relating to admission, including identifying those individuals to whom the Act applies, the criteria for admission, means of accessing admission, and time limits. Part III considers issues relating to consent to treatment, including determinations of capacity and substitute decision makers. Part IV introduces the topic of community treatment orders and part V covers issues relating to patient rights and rights advisors. The final parts deal with issues relating to the Psychiatric Facilities Review Board, personal property, and confidentiality & privacy

Based upon a literature review, key informant interviews, a stakeholder workshop to review the findings of those activities, and a collaborative review of the recommendations with provincial government stakeholders, this synthesis report was developed to assist the Seniors Oral Health Collaboration (SOHC) in furthering their work. This report presents a review of literature findings examining why oral health is important and reviews specific issues related to the oral health of seniors. Next, findings from both key informants and the literature review are presented regarding the current situation of oral health and seniors. The broad topic areas of accessibility to oral health care, public awareness and promotion, education, policies, standards and guidelines, assessments and programs, and research and evaluation are discussed. Finally, conclusions and recommendations for future action are provided, incorporating the feedback received from meetings with stakeholders and provincial government stakeholders.--Document
