Il pianto e il riso delle quattro stagioni by Benedetto Marcello( )

10 editions published between 2002 and 2019 in 3 languages and held by 440 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739), remembered best today for some attractive instrumental music, including some virtuosic works for oboe, and his satire of the opera house, Il teatro alla moda, also wrote a small group of oratorios, including a pair of allegorical pieces for the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin at Macerata. One of these was Il pianto e il riso delle quattro stagioni from 1733. It has been described as a "highly poetic, generally mellow, faintly comic" work, in which Marcello employed "the whole arsenal of techniques he had mastered over a quarter-century"; in fact, not only is there amazing attention to detail in the string articulation, but it also provides an important record of a composer's expectations of his string orchestra. Few oratorios from this locale and period are available in modern editions, and this example has all the formal characteristics associated with the genre of oratorio in the first half of the eighteenth century." --

Il trionfo della Poesia, e della Musica by Benedetto Marcello( )

6 editions published in 2016 in Italian and Undetermined and held by 298 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Il trionfo has many characteristics of the oratorio genre as Italy understood it in the early eighteenth century. The story is carried forward by a small number of characters, with little involvement of a chorus. The nature of the text, an allegorical representation of the assumption of the Virgin Mary, is, however, less expected. The feast (15 August) celebrates the death and translation of Mary, a story that survives in Greek, Latin, Syriac, and Coptic sources. In Il trionfo, however, any religious narrative is eschewed for a debate between Music and Poetry. Using the building blocks of the oratorio, Marcello achieves a dynamic, dramatic work by introducing variations into the recitative-da capo pattern. The slightly passé academic style of Il pianto has been lifted in tone, leading to the lighter, more homophonic approach of the early classical style." --
Cassandra by Benedetto Marcello( )

7 editions published in 2016 in 3 languages and held by 294 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Benedetto Marcello's Cassandra was composed in 1727 to a poem by Antonio Conti written at Marcello's request. Cassandra is a large-scale dramatic cantata for solo alto voice with unfigured basso continuo for the harpsichord. The cantata was not published in Marcello's lifetime and describes the events of the last years of Trojan War, as told by the prophetess Cassandra. Unique in its formal design, the cantata blends arioso sections with recitatives and arias. The expressive vocal line conveys grief, rage, terror, and happiness, and demands vocal agility and technical command from the singer. Cassandra was among the most popular of Marcello's cantatas during the eighteenth century and continued to be performed regularly up to forty years after it was composed." --
