The Dresden Staatskapelle has a very special tradition of performing Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Since 1900, the piece has been performed yearly on Palm Sunday, having been popularized by Richard Wagner in 1843

This recording of Bruckner's fifth has been published several times by various companies, with many containing questionable sound quality. The present release is sourced from the original tape kept in the archive of Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg. The tape needed only minimal reworking, as the sound quality is very good. After nearly seventy years, the odyssey of this recording concludes in time to commemorate Wilhelm Furtwangler's 125th Anniversary year

The premiere of 'The Rite of Spring' in Paris on 29 May 1913 was the most significant event in twentieth-century classical music and the shock of this revolutionary score can still be felt today. This collection celebrates the centenary of this pivotal occasion by bringing together all thirty-seven recordings of the work in the catalogue of Decca, Deutsches Grammophon and Philips, spanning over sixty years and including three for piano duets. The set also includes an archive recording of Stravinsky's violin concerto conducted by the composer, with Samuel Dushkin as the soloist, who gave the premiere performance of the work

Symphony no. 1 ; Tragic overture ; Academic festival overture by Gustav Mahler( )

14 editions published between 1982 and 2000 in No Linguistic content and German and held by 577 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Written when the composer was only in his late twenties, Mahler's first symphony is a study in optimism. 'In full sail' (his original title for the second movement) could be a motto for the whole work. In this vast symphony, we hear his love of nature and beauty, Mahler's childhood memories, fragments of distant military music, birdsong and even Yiddish folk tunes as they blend together into a paean to life and hope

Anna Vinnitskaya has now joined Alpha Classics. Her first recording for the label is devoted to one of her repertories of choice: the concertos of Shostakovich.'When I performed the Second Piano Concerto for the first time at the age of eleven, his music seemed very optimistic to me. Only later did I understand everything else that is concealed behind the "façade" of Shostakovich's music.'[The Russian pianist reveals two facets of the composer's music on this disc by juxtaposing the First Piano Concerto in C minor op. 35, an 'insolent' composition with a kaleidoscope of atmospheres and stylistic registers (Russian Romanticism, American jazz, neoclassicism) that constantly surprise the listener, and the more traditional Concerto in F major, which radiates youthful high spirits.] A pupil of Sergey Ossipenko at the Serge Rachmaninoff Conservatory, then of the great Evgeni Koroliov at the Musikhochschule in Hamburg, Anna Vinnitskaya won the Leonard Bernstein Prize, but it was her First Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 2007 that launched her career. For this recording, Anna Vinnitskaya is surrounded by partners of the front rank: the famous Kremerata Baltica, regarded as one of the most creative ensembles on today's musical scene, and the prestigious wind players of the Staatskapelle Dresden

Century rolls ; Lollapalooza ; Slonimsky's earbox by John Adams( Recording )

7 editions published in 2000 in No Linguistic content and Undetermined and held by 535 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Of all the so-called minimalists working today, John Adams is the only one with any good ideas left. Witness this delightful release. The key to Adams's creativity is that he isn't bound by theoretical constraints on what "minimalism" should be. Century Rolls (1995) is a commission by Emanuel Ax, and it was inspired by the composer's listening to a CD recording of an ancient player piano. Century Rolls doesn't duplicate that sound, but it is, instead, an unexpected romp across new rhythmic territory. As for Mr. Ax, he comports himself very well, particularly in the difficult first Movement, which requires deft coordination of all forces involved. The brief Lollapalooza (1995) is more recognizably minimalist but with considerable orchestral color and shifting moods. And Slominsky's Earbox (1996) is a powerfully full-orchestra-driven canter. All this is to say that the CD is one of the best releases of Adams's career, and it will appeal to a very wide audience. --Paul Cook
