On the Mother of God by Jacob( Book )

5 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 191 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Jacob of Serug was born at Curtem on the Euphrates, ca. 451. Very little is known of his life. He probably studied at the school of Edessa. He became a monk and priest. Early in life he began writing and is thought to have composed more than 700 homilies." "Jacob, "flute of the Holy Spirit and harp of the faithful church," had a great love of the Mother of God. In this volume, four homilies have been chosen from the Syriac texts. The poetry is typological and rooted in Scripture. It offers, as Professor Brock notes in his Introduction, an alternative to the "liberal critical approach to the bible" or to an excessively "fundamentalist approach."" --Book Jacket

Jacob of Sarug's Homily on the Creation of Adam and the resurrection of the dead by Jacob( Book )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 77 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Jacob of Sarug's Homily on the Creation of Adam and the Resurrection of the Dead is a meditation on the fall of Adam and its consequences. Adam was created the pinnacle of God's creation, a "god of flesh" in whom was constituted all the rest of nature. Adam was set on the summit of Paradise, but due to his incalculably huge fall from that pinnacle, he and all creation became subject to corruption. The world and all that was in it will eventually die as did the body of Adam. God's mercy, however, through the incarnation, passion and death of His Son, will restore everything to a state even better than the original making it possible for Adam and the rest of creation to be reconstituted in a spiritual, incorruptible form that will exist eternally in the unending light of Christ. "--
Jacob of Sarug's Homily on the sinful woman by Jacob( )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 77 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Recognized as a saint by both Chalcedonian and non-Chalcedonian Christians alike, Jacob of Sarug (d. 521) produced many narrative poems that have rarely been translated into English. Of his reported 760 metrical homilies, only about half survive. Part of a series of fascicles containing the bilingual Syriac-English editions of Saint Jacob of Sarug's homilies, this volume contains his homily on the Sinful Woman. The Syriac text is fully vocalized, and the translation is annotated with a commentary and biblical references. The volume is one of the fascicles of Gorgias Press's The Metrical Homilies of Mar Jacob of Sarug, which, when complete, will contain all of Jacob's surviving sermons"--

Jacob of Serugh's Hexaemeron by Jacob( Book )

2 editions published in 2018 in Syriac and English and held by 69 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A fifth-sixth century clergyman-cum-theologian, Jacob of Serugh (also spelled Sarug), was an extremely prolific writer. Not counting a number of works in prose he is said to have written nearly 800 homilies, mostly on themes of theological import or biblical stories and personalities. These homilies are composed in metre: each line has twelve vowels. So far less than 150 such homilies have been edited and/or translated. Hexaemeron is an exposition of the first six days of the universe. Jacob dedicated an extra homily to the sabbath, making a total of seven homilies. This genre was known earlier in Greek. Jacob's is the first of the kind in Syriac. Currently the only complete text of Jacob's Hexaemeron is available in an edition by Bedjan (1905-10), but with no translation. This is the first time that this highly interesting work is made available in its entirety, accompanied by an English translation. The editor studies six complete manuscripts and one containing only two homilies. None of these seven manuscrips was available to Bedjan, and one of them is presumably as old as the principal manuscript used by Bedjan
