The case for STEM education : challenges and opportunities by Rodger W Bybee( )

8 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 727 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"If you're an education leader concerned with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) initiatives, this book will help you both understand and implement STEM action plans. The book starts by putting STEM in context, as the early chapters outline the challenges facing STEM education, draw lessons from the Sputnik moment of the 1950s and 1960s, and contrast contemporary STEM with other education reforms. The author then explores appropriate roles for the federal government as well as states, districts, and individual schools. Finally, the book offers several ideas you can use to develop actual action plans for STEM. Throughout the book, author Rodger W. Bybee puts an emphasis on both thinking and acting. That's why The Case for STEM Education is a must-read for leaders at all levels: national and state policy makers, state-level educators responsible for STEM initiatives, college and university faculty who educate future STEM teachers, local administrators who make decisions about district and school programs, and teachers who represent STEM disciplines."--Publisher's description

STEM education now more than ever by Rodger W Bybee( )

4 editions published in 2018 in English and Undetermined and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In response to "these unconventional and uncertain years," veteran educator Rodger W. Bybee has written a book that's as thought-provoking as it is constructive. Now more than ever, he writes, America needs reminders of both the themes that made it great in the first place and STEM's contributions to its citizens." Science educators must address STEM issues at local, national, and global levels. And teachers should help students tackle today's problems with new approaches to STEM learning that complement traditional single-discipline programs. STEM Education Now More Than Ever addresses these themes through four wide-ranging sections. Parts of the book are what you might expect from a longtime thought leader in science education. In light of the 2016 election and recent assaults on science's validity, Bybee strongly asserts the need for a new case for STEM education. Other parts may not seem typical for a book on STEM. He writes about the Enlightenment, the U.S. Constitution, democracy, and citizenship as reminders of the effects of STEM disciplines on America's foundational ideas and values. In the end, Bybee ties it all together with positive, practical recommendations. A major one involves newer, faster ways to help teachers develop STEM units that address contemporary challenges in their classes. Another involves the importance of strong leadership from teachers and the STEM education community--leadership Bybee believes we need now more than ever."

Teaching about science and society : activities for elementary and junior high school by Rodger W Bybee( Book )

4 editions published in 1984 in English and held by 91 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book provides activities designed to meet the needs of new and practicing elementary and middle school science teachers. The activities, which focus on science and society, are arranged in four major sections: environmental biology activities; health and nutrition activities; physical science activities; and earth and environmental science activities. The activities in each section are divided into these grade levels: kindergarten through second grade (k-2); third through fifth grade (3-5); and sixth through eighth grade (6-8). Each grade level section is preceded by a planning chart that provides an overview of the activities and concludes with an annotated listing of resources for that discipline. Individual activities begin with an overview that provides a summary of the lesson. There is a section on science background in which major concepts are presented in a short "in depth" discussion for the teacher. This discussion is intended to provide an understanding of the scientific content of the lesson. A section on societal implications follows, in which the scientific content is extended to the social context. The next sections are basic to most lessons: major concepts, objectives, materials, vocabulary, and procedures. An introduction (with rationale for teaching about science and society, and a bibliography) is included. (Jn)
