Oceanography of the Grand Banks region of Newfoundland, March 1974-October 1974 by Charles R Weir( Book )

2 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 87 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Two cruises were conducted to the Grand Banks of Newfoundland during the 1974 International Ice Patrol season. The main purpose of these cruises was to assist Commander, International Ice Patrol in the prediction of iceberg drift. Direct current measurements were made in the Ice Patrol area with both subsurface current meter arrays and shipboard current meter stations. A flow onto the Grand Banks was observed in addition to the southerly flowing Labrador Current. An additional research was completed involving the tagging of icebergs and the observation of their drift. (Author)

Tidal current atlas for Long Island Sound and San Francisco Bay by J. A Fornshell( Book )

4 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 77 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A computerized Tidal Current Model for Long Island Sound and San Francisco Bay has been developed by the Coast Guard Oceanographic Unit. The model is a digitized version of the National Ocean Survey's Tidal Current Tables and the Tidal Current Charts for Long Island Sound and Block Island Sound and San Francisco Bay. Tests were conducted to verify the accuracy of these sources of tidal current information using a drift pole survey of surface currents for Long Island Sound published by the Coast and Geodetic Survey and the Army Corps of Engineers Hydraulic Model Bay and Delta Model for San Francisco. The Long Island Sound test showed complete agreement between the model and observations 83.2% of the time, and 100% agreement at 40% of the positions tested. The San Grancisco Bay test showed under prediction of speeds by 0.5 to 1.0 knots in 3 of 4 regions and over prediction by 0.6 knots in the 4th region. The predicted directions were deflected to the right of the observed directions 75% of the time by 49.15 to 66.11 degrees. These comparisons indicate that the data for Long Island Sound is reliable and that for San Francisco Bay should be used with caution. (Author)

An analytical sea current model for coastal regions with application to the New York Bight by Joseph M Bishop( Book )

2 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 48 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Seasonal coastal currents on a continental shelf are modeled for use in Search and Rescue planning. The model considers a balance of Coriolis, pressure gradient, and frictional forces. Input parameters are the climatological wind and density fields. Comparison of results to currents depicted on climatological atlases for the New York Bight indicates the validity of the approach. In this light, one might extend this approach to other geographical regions where analogous oceanographic conditions prevail."--Author's abstract

Oceanographic conditions in Nares Strait, August-September 1970 by Martin J Moynihan( Book )

2 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Oceanographic observations from the CGC WESTWIND in the Nares Strait region during August and September 1970 are presented. Observed temperature-salinity characteristics are discussed in relation to the interchange of water between the Arctic Ocean and Baffin Bay and the formation of Baffin Bay Deep Water. An average northward transport of 480,000 cu m/sec. from Smith Sound into Kane Basin was computed and is compared with previous transport calculations. The relationship of tidal and wind conditions to the volume transport is also discussed. (Author)
Oceanographic observations in Kane Basin, September 1968 and July, September 1969 by Martin J Moynihan( Book )

3 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 44 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Oceanographic observations were made on three cruises to Kane Basin in 1968 and 1969. Temperature, salinity, and oxygen characteristics are described. No water with the characteristics of Baffin Bay Deep Water was found south of the 250 meter sill in Kane Basin, indirectly confirming the possibility of a pulsing of cold dense water over the sill into Baffin Bay. Volume transports through the southern entrance to Kane Basin were calculated and compared with tide and wind conditions without finding any direct correlation. (Author)
