"The successive phases of the modern era - from Post-Impressionism, Symbolism, Expressionism, Neoclassicism and New Objectivity to the figural work of artists on the fringe of the contemporary art scene - reflect the stages in the evolutionary process that has changed the artist's image of the body over the past 100 years."--Jacket
Louise Bourgeois by Louise Bourgeois( Book )

12 editions published in 1995 in English and German and held by 309 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Born in Paris in 1911, Louise Bourgeois is one of the great lone wolves of 20th-century art. The work of the sculptress, a resident of New York since 1938, has attracted a steadily growing circle of admirers in the U.S. since the 1970s. The strong interest in her work found its first major expression in the retrospective presented by the New York Museum of Modern Art in 1982. The work itself cannot be appraised from the detached standpoint of cultural evolution or art history, nor is it possible to associate it with any given group of artists (L. Lippard). It is the expression of radical, personal symbolism that at the same time breaks through the boundaries of the personal sphere in its objectification of fundamental feelings and psycho-physical states. This volume contains a series of essays by leading American art historians, who approach her work from a variety of different perspectives. It also includes a complete bibliography on Louise Bourgeois and her work

Erotic art : from the 17th century to the 20h century by Peter Weiermair( Book )

22 editions published in 1995 in 3 languages and held by 214 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The watercolors, drawings and print portfolios presented in this publication are not only outstanding examples of their genre, but also an invaluable documentation of social mores and cultural history from the 17th century onwards. These works of erotic art from all over Europe are part of a major private collection built up over a period of many years. The main focus of this particular selection is on lesser known and rarely published material, open to a wide range of possible interpretation. In tracing the history of taboo, secrecy and prohibition, this book gives its readers access to material previously available only to scholars and specialists."--Jacket

Light years by Ralph Gibson( Book )

4 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 187 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume presents the 92 most significant pictorial compositions of Ralph Gibson. His raw materials are the lines and shapes of seemingly mundane objects - a streetlamp, the back of a chair, a wine bottle, a human silhouette against the light. Based upon an unusual black-and-white technique, his photography is metaphorical rather than documentary." "The contents of Gibson's pictures are difficult to grasp, often even mysterious. Some compositions seem characterized by unusual control, structure and clarity, while others are opulent, seductive and full of hidden meaning. Gibson celebrates what he sees. The human form is generalized far beyond the concrete-associative representational approach of portraiture. In deliberately overlooking the signs and props of specific locale, Gibson raises individual figures to an abstract level of human existence. His often fragmentary figures draw the viewer's attention to the design and composition of the pictorial details. The organic structure of such pictures clearly suggests that their origins are by no means random. With great precision and without sentimentality he succeeds in making his "message" comprehensible."--Jacket

Vance Kirkland 1904-1981 by Vance Kirkland( Book )

5 editions published in 1998 in English and German and held by 157 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Vance Kirkland (Ohio, 1904 - Denver, 1981) was a fine, mysterious American painter whose unique abstract methods were not discovered and appreciated until after he died. During the first half of his fifty-four year career, he was nationally famous in America for his masterful realist and surrealist watercolor, gouache and casein paintings and he exhibited with such artists as Dali, Ernst, Margritte and Miro. The abrupt transition to abstraction and oil sent him into a spiral of oblivion but also into increasingly brilliant and distinctive paintings. He had started mixing watercolor and denatured alcohol, and later oil paint and water for a major period of resist abstract expressionism." "Kirkland's paintings have been awakened from their isolation in the middle of America to take a rightful place in global art."--Jacket
Male nudes by women : an anthology by Peter Weiermair( Book )

4 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 152 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The present anthology, Male Nudes by Women, edited by Peter Weiermair, reflects the current efforts of a number of female photographers in dealing with the male body. It reflects as well their critical approach to seemingly rigid gender roles and cliches, developed over a period of centuries, and to their own erotic imaginations."--Jacket
