"A hand-printed edition of 20 riddles published in Lisbon by the Casa do Prazer in 1693. The Casa, a cloistered group of Portuguese nuns who enjoyed secular verse, communicated via writing and exchanges of books and manuscripts. They also hand-copied manuscripts and distributed them. Alatorre proposes that these riddles are likely the last texts Sor Juana wrote; his edition is faithful to the original, without answers or commentary. Highly recommended for scholars and students of Sor Juana's works"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58

Language : an introduction to the study of speech by Edward Sapir( Book )

7 editions published between 1954 and 1992 in Spanish and held by 84 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, first published in 1921, is intended as a basic introduction to linguistic science, especially for the layman. The introductory chapter defines language as a cultural function and as the possible basis of all thought. The elements of language are treated in sections on phonetics, words, grammatical concepts, and grammatical processes. Language is then presented from a historical point of view in chapters dealing with dialectal and grammatical shift, phonetic law, and word borrowings. A chapter on the "types of linguistic structure" gives a detailed discussion of the terms "inflection" and "agglutination," and offers a system for the classification of languages. Included also are a chapter on "language, race and culture," which asserts that there is no necessary connection among the three phenomena, and a final section on "language and literature." This book is available for $1.25 from harcourt, brace world, inc., 757 third avenue, new york city, N.Y. 10022. (rw)

La migraña by Antonio Alatorre( Book )

2 editions published in 2012 in Spanish and held by 56 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Antonio Alatorre's vast oeuvre, La migraña occupies a special place as the only novel written by this man of letters and to which he dedicated considerable effort. Told through an internal dialogue and from different perspectives, opening up readers eyes, the novel tells the story of Guillermo, a character who sets off on a journey to his adolescence; he is confronted with the moral precepts of religion, the discovery of sex, and life beyond the strict Catholic school education he received. A creative exercise that unmasks an aspect of Alatorre's work that is sure to captivate readers
European literature and the Latin Middle Ages by Ernst Robert Curtius( Book )

23 editions published between 1955 and 2004 in 3 languages and held by 50 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Published just after the Second World War, European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages is a sweeping exploration of the remarkable continuity of European literature across time and place, from the classical era up to the early nineteenth century, and from the Italian peninsula to the British Isles. In what T.S. Eliot called a ""magnificent"" book, Ernst Robert Curtius establishes medieval Latin literature as the vital transition between the literature of antiquity and the vernacular literatures of later centuries. The result is nothing less than a masterful synthesis of European l
The solitudes of Luis de Góngora by Luis de Góngora y Argote( Book )

8 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in Spanish and held by 46 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Gongora pioneered poetic forms so radically different from the dominant aesthetic of his time that he was derided as "the Prince of Darkness." In The Solitudes, his intoxicatingly lush novel-in-verse, a shipwrecked man who has been spurned by his lover is wrenched from civilization and its attendant madness and transported to a natural world that is at once menacing and sublime. Edith Grossman, one of the most acclaimed translators of our time, captures its breathtaking beauty in a translation that honors in English a work that represents one of the high points of poetic achievement in any language. --Penguin Classics
