Violin concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach( )

24 editions published between 1993 and 2005 in 4 languages and held by 752 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn concertos both have played a significant role in Ray Chen's career. His superb performance of the works led to his triumph at two major violin competitions: the 2008 Yehudi Menuhin Competition and first prize in the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels a year later. Chen brings a fresh interpretation to the cornerstones of violin repertoire and finds a kindred spirit in conductor Daniel Harding and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra
Salome by Richard Strauss( )

31 editions published between 1994 and 2014 in German and Undetermined and held by 636 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This performance presents the great Leonie Rysanek in one of her most memorable roles--the teenage Judean princess Salome. Obsessed with the prophet Jochanaan, the Biblical John the Baptist (Norman Bailey), she skillfully manipulates her lecherous stepfather Herod (Ragnar Ulfung) until he has no choice but to have the holy man killed for spurning the princess's advances. The legendary Astrid Varnay is Salome's mother, Herodias. Highlights of the score include the Dance of the Seven Veils and Salome's final monologue, one of the supreme dramatic achievements in all of opera
Century rolls ; Lollapalooza ; Slonimsky's earbox by John Adams( Recording )

10 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in 3 languages and held by 562 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Of all the so-called minimalists working today, John Adams is the only one with any good ideas left. Witness this delightful release. The key to Adams's creativity is that he isn't bound by theoretical constraints on what "minimalism" should be. Century Rolls (1995) is a commission by Emanuel Ax, and it was inspired by the composer's listening to a CD recording of an ancient player piano. Century Rolls doesn't duplicate that sound, but it is, instead, an unexpected romp across new rhythmic territory. As for Mr. Ax, he comports himself very well, particularly in the difficult first Movement, which requires deft coordination of all forces involved. The brief Lollapalooza (1995) is more recognizably minimalist but with considerable orchestral color and shifting moods. And Slominsky's Earbox (1996) is a powerfully full-orchestra-driven canter. All this is to say that the CD is one of the best releases of Adams's career, and it will appeal to a very wide audience. --Paul Cook

Wozzeck by Alban Berg( Recording )

40 editions published between 1981 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 420 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

James Levine, a longtime champion of this groundbreaking work, has conducted every Met performance of Wozzeck since 1974. He brings Berg's revolutionary score to dramatic life in this broadcast, leading an extraordinary cast headed by Christian Boesch and Hildegard Behrens. Boesch gives a heartbreaking performance as the poor, abused soldier of the title, and Behrens is stunning as his faithless and conflicted wife, Marie. Richard Cassilly sings the vain Drum Major who seduces her, and Ragnar Ulfung and Franz Mazura are the Captain and the Doctor, who mock and torture Wozzeck
