What do we talk about when we talk? : speculative grammar and the semantics and pragmatics of focus by Johan van der Auwera( )

16 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 1,510 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This monograph deals with the 'aboutness' of language. First, the sense in which language 'is about' or 'reflects' both reality and a mental picture of reality is turned into a cornerstone of a reflectionist or 'Speculative Grammarian' semantics and pragmatics. Second, the 'Speculative Grammar' idea is made concrete in a logico-linguistic account of the way language 'is about' the whole of reality as well as about certain fractions of it. Third, the reflectionist perspective is used for a universalist account of the way speech acts 'are about' their subjects, topics, and foci

The languages and linguistics of Europe : a comprehensive guide( )

16 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 1,261 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Languages and Linguistics of Europe: A Comprehensive Guide" is part of the multi-volume reference work on the languages and linguistics of the continents of the world. The book supplies profiles of the language families of Europe, including the sign languages. It also discusses the areal typology, paying attention to the Standard Average European, Balkan, Baltic and Mediterranean convergence areas. Separate chapters deal with the old and new minority languages and with non-standard varieties. A major focus is language politics and policies, including discussions of the special status of English, the relation between language and the church, language and the school, and standardization. The history of European linguistics is another focus as is the history of multilingual European 'empires' and their dissolution. The volume is especially geared towards a graduate and advanced undergraduate readership. It has been designed such that it can be used, as a whole or in parts, as a textbook, the first of its kind, for graduate programmes with a focus on the linguistic (and linguistics) landscape of Europe
Perspectives on variation : sociolinguistic, historical, comparative( )

13 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 959 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Main description: The significant advances witnessed over the last years in the broad field of linguistic variation testify to a growing convergence between sociolinguistic approaches and the somewhat older historical and comparative research traditions. Particularly within cognitive and functional linguistics, the evolution towards a maximally dynamic approach to language goes hand in hand with a renewed interest in corpus research and quantitative methods of analysis. Many researchers feel that only in this way one can do justice to the complex interaction of forces and factors involved in linguistic variability, both synchronically and diachronically. The contributions to this volume illustrate the ongoing evolution of the field. By bringing together a series of analyses that rely on extensive corpuses to shed light on sociolinguistic, historical, and comparative forms of variation, the volume highlights the interaction between these subfields

Irregularity in morphology (and beyond) by Thomas Stolz( )

3 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 366 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Irregularity is a philological concept which is not adequately defined. The present volume aims to improve the understanding of irregularity within the domain of morphology, relating to inflectional, derivation, and compounding. Studies aim to discover the potential regularity behind irregularities, the fact or hypothesis that regular (sound) change produces irregularity (Sturtevant's Paradox), the nature of paradigms (esp. suppletion and overabundance), and the interplay of irregular morphology with syntax and pragmatics. Perspectives are synchronic and diachronic. A few studies approach irregularity from the psycholinguistic point of view (issues of memory and acquisition). Languages studied include Latin and its daughter languages French, Catalan and Italian, but also English, German, Greek, Russian, Turkish, Thompson Salish, and the Iroquoian languages. Theories discussed include Canonical Typology, Distributed Morphology, Whole Word Morphology, Minimalism, and the Procedural/Declarative Model
