The Mozart-Da Ponte operas : the cultural and musical background to Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte by Andrew Steptoe( Book )

30 editions published between 1987 and 2001 in English and held by 960 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mozart's collaborations with the librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte led to the composition of three of the great masterpieces of opera, Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Cosi fan tutte. The aim of this book is to guide the reader to a deeper understanding and enjoyment of these enigmatic works, not so much through detailed musical analysis as through setting the scene for their composition. The author examines the cultural and social context in which they were written, the sort of audience who might have attended, their tastes and expectations. He considers Mozart's own intentions and aspirations of these works, composed over a period of rapid intellectual and political change, during which his beliefs, ambitions, and position in society shifted radically. At a musical level, Mozart's work underwent crucial stylistic developments that are manifest in these three operas. We are also given clues to Da Ponte's views of opera and the typie of entertainment he set out to create by an examination of the form in which he presented the three stories, none of which was based on an original plot. Finally, the author looks at the practicalities of opera production in Mozart's time--the musical resources, the availability of singers, and the staging facilities--all of which would have influenced the final creation. Bringing these strands together for the first time, this book provides an illuminating insight into Mozart's creative technique and into the functions of opera in his time
Genius and the mind : studies of creativity and temperament by Andrew Steptoe( Book )

19 editions published between 1998 and 2005 in English and held by 644 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"What is genius? Are there easily identifiable personality traits associated with giftedness? What is the link between intense creativity and madness? These are just some of the questions explored in Genius and the Mind. With historical studies of some of the most famous creative people, this exciting book considers the nature of creativity and genius from a psychological standpoint. Chapters, written by leading researchers in the study of genius, span the range of approaches used to understand the subject--from discussions of the role of genes in giftedness to the importance of social context in defining and acknowledging creativity. Mozart's precocity, Byron's mania, Shakespeare's literary brilliance, personalities of the Italian Renaissance painters, and the psychoses of many celebrated writers are all discussed, making this a fascinating text for anyone with an interest in the psychology of genius and geniuses, as well as for students and researchers in the field."--Amazon.com

Handbook of behavioral medicine : methods and applications( )

20 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and German and held by 480 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Behavioral medicine emerged in the 1970s as the interdisciplinary field concerned with the integration of behavioral, psychosocial, and biomedical science knowledge relevant to the understanding of health and illness, and the application of this knowledge to prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. Recent years have witnessed an enormous diversification of behavioral medicine, with new sciences (such as genetics, life course epidemiology) and new technologies (such as neuroimaging) coming into play. This book brings together such new developments by providing an up-to-date compendium of methods and applications drawn from the broad range of behavioral medicine research and practice. The book is divided into 10 sections that address key fields in behavioral medicine. Each section begins with one or two methodological or conceptual chapters, followed by contributions that address substantive topics within that field. Major health problems such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, HIV/AIDs, and obesity are explored from multiple perspectives. The aim is to present behavioral medicine as an integrative discipline, involving diverse methodologies and paradigms that converge on health and well being

Stress and cardiovascular disease by Paul Hjemdahl( )

20 editions published between 2010 and 2012 in English and held by 380 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

There is a growing trend for the incorporation of stress management into cardiac rehabilitation programs and into preventive cardiology. However, stress is multifaceted, often misunderstood, and requires as much scientific scrutiny as other pathological processes relevant to cardiology. The quality of research into stress management is variable, and care is required in identifying effective evidence-based methods. There is thus a need for better understanding of stress and its ramifications among cardiologists, other clinicians caring for cardiac patients, and by those involved in primary prevention. Stress and Cardiovascular Disease provides an up to date survey of research, highlighting the clinical implications of physiological and population studies of stress. Each chapter addresses a particular aspect of this exciting field of basic and clinical research. This multidisciplinary volume will serve as an aid to physicians in their management of stress-related issues in cardiac patients and high-risk individuals
Psychosocial processes and health : a reader by Andrew Steptoe( Book )

15 editions published between 1994 and 1995 in English and Undetermined and held by 330 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Understanding the links between the social environment, emotion, behaviour and illness is a growing theme in medical and health education. The development of the field is reflected in the growth of disciplines such as health psychology, psychosocial epidemiology, and behavioural medicine. The basic literature is however awkwardly dispersed across medical and social science journals. This book makes available within a single volume some of the most important articles that have been published over the past thirty years. The thirty-one articles are grouped round six themes: life stress, social support and health; psychophysiological processes in disease; personality, behaviour patterns and health; health practices and the modification of health risk behaviour; coping with illness and disability; behavioural interventions in medicine. Each is prefaced by a state-of-the-art review of the theme by the editors. These readings will serve as a most valuable resource for psychology and health science teachers and students alike

Clinical and methodological issues in cardiovascular psychophysiology by Andrew Steptoe( Book )

10 editions published in 1985 in English and German and held by 167 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume arose from a discussion meeting entitled "Applied Psychophysiology in Cardiovascular Research: Clinical and Methodological Issues" held in May 1984 in Linz, Federal Republic of Germany. The meeting was orga nised by the Commission of the European Communities' Con certed Action on Quantification of Parameters for the study of Breakdown in Human Adaptation, in conjunction wi th the Department of Internal Medicine, Uni versi ty of Bonn. The Concerted Action is part of the Medical and Public Health Research Programme of the CEC, and its pur pose is to encourage multidisciplinary research into the development, refinement and standardisation of parameters used to measure psychosocial, physiological and endocri nological aspects of breakdown. This meeting is one of a series in which detailed consideration is given to spe cific methodological issues within the field of research linking stress with disease. However, the contributions to this book have been extended and restructured consid erably since their presentation at the meeting. Addition al chapters have been prepared that address important is sues which were not discussed at the meeting itself. The editors are grateful to the Commission of the Europe an Communities and the University of Bonn for their sup port, and also acknowledge the financial assistance of Bayer AG, Ciba/Geigy, Hoffman-La Roche, Boehringer Ing- heim and Ver1a-Pharm. We extend special thanks to Sue Wilson for the care with which she has prepared the manu script for publication
Mozart by Andrew Steptoe( Recording )

16 editions published between 1996 and 1997 in 4 languages and held by 135 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Andrew Steptoe's Mozart uses extracts from the voluminous correspondence of the Mozart family to amplify an intriguing story that is not only a model of clarity but refreshingly free from traditional sentimental clutter. He places the composer's father at the heart of Mozart's personal and creative life and deploys the cultural, social, and musical context of the late-eighteenth-century Habsburg empire to present a rich, vivid, and sympathetic portrait of an artist whose popularity is matched by his greatness."--Jacket
The Routledge international handbook of psychosocial epidemiology by Mika Kivimäki( )

8 editions published between 2017 and 2018 in English and held by 88 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The health effects of psychosocial factors are a widely discussed and controversial topic. Do positive and negative emotions affect our risk of developing physical disease? Are depressive individuals more likely to have cancer than those with an optimistic outlook on life? And what is the role of IQ in staying healthy and recovering from disease? Importantly, can we improve our health and life expectancy by avoiding certain psychosocial risk factors and maximizing positive psychological well-being? These and other questions are the focus of psychosocial epidemiology, a discipline linking psychological, social and biological sciences. The Routledge International Handbook of Psychosocial Epidemiology is the first book to map this growing discipline. Including contributions from many of the leading researchers in the field, it is divided into five sections: Part I: Methodological challenges in studying psychosocial factors and health; Part II: Psychosocial factors in the etiology and prognosis of chronic diseases; Part III: Controversies in the psychosocial approach; Part IV: Interventions and policy implications; Part V: Future research directionsTaking advantage of a huge growth in research in recent years, the book provides the reader with the essentials to evaluate the diverse set of studies on psychosocial factors and health that are published today, and describes study designs in this field of research, progress in judging the validity of epidemiological evidence, as well as challenges in translating evidence into action. This is an important and timely book. Providing methodological rigour, critical analysis and the policy implications of this emerging field of study, The Routledge International Handbook of Psychosocial Epidemiology will be an invaluable resource for students and researchers within both behavioural and medical sciences, as well as policy makers and others working in health and social care"--Site de l'éditeur

Behavioral treatment of disease by Richard S Surwit( )

1 edition published in 1982 in English and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Behavioral Treatment of Disease: A NATO Symposium on Behavioral Medicine was held on June 30th through July 3rd, 1981 at Porto Carras, Neo Marmaras, Greece. It was a multi disciplinary meeting which provided an opportunity for North American and European scientists from ten different NATO member countries to share the emerging principles and technology of behavioral treatment of disease. In addition, it served as a forum whereby continued high level research in the area was stimulated. Financial support for the symposium was initially provided by the Scientific Affairs Division or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as part of their continuing seri.es of scientific symposia. Funds made available by a grant from the United States Office of Naval Reseach permitted widespread inter national participation in the symposium. We would like to thank each of these organizations for their support in making the symposium possible. In particular, we would like to thank Dr. B.A. Bayraktar of the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO and Dr. Donald Woodward of the U.S. Office of Naval Research. Though both of these men were unable to attend the meeting personally, they provided invaluable assistance in its planning
