Die Zauberflote by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart( )

67 editions published between 1973 and 2011 in 8 languages and held by 1,388 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mozart's magical fairy tale has enchanted and moved audiences for more than 200 years--which is easy to understand after hearing this broadcast, brilliantly conducted by James Levine. The handsome, stalwart prince Tamino (Francisco Araiza) must fight supernatural forces to rescue the beautiful princess (Kathleen Battle) with whom he has fallen in love--after seeing only her portrait. But Tamino is in a strange land and doesn't know whom he can trust, including Sarastro (Kurt Moll), the leader of a mysterious noble order
Der Freischutz by Carl Maria von Weber( )

51 editions published between 1980 and 2016 in 4 languages and held by 1,136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wagner said this early-Romantic gem was the most German of German operas. Its irresistible mix of colorful folklore, the spooky supernatural, a tender romance, and the passionate struggle between good and evil are all captured in Weber's tuneful and dramatic score. The cast in this rare U.S. performance is sensational: Sándor Kónya as our hero, the forester Max, who must win a shooting contest in order to marry his beloved Agathe (the ravishing Pilar Lorengar), despite the dark plotting of Caspar (Gerd Feldhoff)

Die Schöpfung by Joseph Haydn( )

48 editions published between 1977 and 2014 in 6 languages and held by 972 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This marvellous recording, sung in German, comes as a surprise, since Bernard Haitink is not obviously associated with Haydn. In fact he didn't tackle The Creation until 2011, when he was 82. He approaches this great choral masterpiece with wit, unhurried grandeur, riveting orchestral detail and forward momentum - in short, with just the acuity he brings to anything he conducts. (....) Gabriel (soprano Camilla Tilling), Uriel (tenor Mark Padmore), and Raphael (bass Hanno Müller-Brachmann). Choir, orchestra and soloists are on sparkling form in this live recording - an invigorating reminder, if any were needed, of Haydn's genius" (The Guardian)

Fidelio, op. 72 by Ludwig van Beethoven( )

18 editions published between 1990 and 2007 in 4 languages and held by 583 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Fidelio, Beethoven's only opera, was based on J.N. Bouilly's Léonore, ou L'amour conjugal, a rescue drama typical of the literature of the French Revolution. The story, possibly derived from a real incident, is a convoluted one, but its celebration of courage and idealism in the face of tyranny greatly appealed to the composer's personal values. The opera took a decade to reach its final form, and even though the work of the librettists in adapting the material left much to be desired -- Joseph Sonnleithner's rather turgid original efforts of 1805-1806 were only partially redeemed by the revisions of Georg Friedrich Treitschke in 1814 -- the end result, thanks to the extraordinary quality of the music, is one of the most powerful and moving operas ever written. - Disc 1 insert p. 3

Mignon Dunn is the dark and malevolent Ortrud who poisons the couple's happiness, with some help from her husband, Telramund (Donald McIntyre). James Levine leads the Met orchestra, bringing out the shimmer and the thunder of the score, along with every shade of expression in between

The great Christa Ludwig is Wotan's exacting wife Fricka
