Reed wrote The War in Eastern Europe as an eyewitness account of "how the different peoples [affected by the war] live; their environment, tradition, and the revealing things they do and say ... Robinson and I have simply tried to give our impressions of human beings as we found them in the countries of Eastern Europe, from April to October, 1915." Reed and Robinson traveled through Serbia, Bucovina (currently Romania and Ukraine), Galicia (currently Poland and Ukraine), Poland, Romania, Russia, and Turkey. Among other events, the book describes the 1915 typhus epidemic in Serbia and the Russian retreat from Poland to Galicia. Conversations with local people, soldiers, officers, and government officials are remembered for each nation, as well as aspects of life for local people (food, their daily concerns, their opinions on the war, etc)

"This Modern Library edition makes available for the first time in a single volume the three works that established American radical John Reed as one of the foremost journalists of his time. First published in 1914, Insurgent Mexico is the rookie war correspondent's poetic chronicle of the four months he spent with Pancho Villa's guerrillas. Brimming with spontaneity and quixotic idealism, the book presents a stirring portrait of the Mexican Revolution unlike any other. The War in Eastern Europe is an evocative journal of Reed's travels through the Balkans and Russia in 1915 that expresses his horror at the carnage of war; yet the book's antiwar position helped make him a pariah. Praised by Lenin for its 'truthful and most vivid exposition of the events [of] the Proletarian Revolution, ' Ten Days That Shook the World endures as Reed's crowning achievement. A masterful eyewitness account of the Bolshevik Revolution, the book ranks as one of the political classics of the twentieth century. In all three works Reed emerges as both an observer of history and a maker of it--a militant crusader for a progressive new social order. With an introduction by Robert A. Rosenstone, author of Romantic Revolutionary."--Jacket
