German Renaissance prints 1490-1550 by Giulia Bartrum( Book )

2 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 333 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Renaissance in Germany was one of the most important periods in the history of European printmaking. Largely through the singular efforts of Albrecht Durer, the woodcut was transformed from cheap book decoration into a medium of artistic merit in its own right. From the last quarter of the fifteenth century painters began to take up the technique of engraving and introduced many innovations. The first etchings ever to be produced, which also include the earliest pure landscapes in European art, date from the first quarter of the sixteenth century."--BOOK JACKET. "The collection held by the British Museum ranks with the greatest in the world and this catalogue includes some of its finest examples. Prints were used to propagate the ideas of the Reformation and the humanists, and were also favoured by the impecunious Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I as a cheap means of glorifying his status, Giulia Bartrum emphasises the stylistic diversity of German Renaissance prints and places them in their historical context. There is a representative selection of the works of Albrecht Durer, who combined unsurpassed technical excellence with artistic genius, and his most idiosyncratic of pupils. Hans Baldung Grien, is also discussed. Artists from Augsburg include Hans Burgkmair, Hans Schaufelein and Jorg Breu. Also represented are Lucas Cranach, close friend of Martin Luther and specialist in elegant portraits and courtly subjects for the dukes of Saxony, and Hans Holbein the Younger, who designed book illustrations in Basel and became court painter to Henry VIII of England."--Jacket

The art of ancient Egypt by Gay Robins( Book )

14 editions published between 1997 and 2008 in English and held by 259 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"From the awesome grandeur of the great pyramids to the delicacy of a face etched on an amulet, the power of the art of ancient Egypt persists to this day. This beautifully illustrated book conducts us through the splendors of this world, great and small, and into the mysteries of its fascination in its day as well as in our own. What did art, and the architecture that housed it, mean to the ancient Egyptians? Why did they invest such vast wealth and effort in its production? These are the puzzles Gay Robins explores as she examines the objects of Egyptian art - the tombs and wall paintings, the sculpture and stelae, the coffins, funerary papyri, and amulets - from its first flowering in the Early Dynastic period to its final resurgence in the time of the Ptolemies."--Publisher's description

"In this revised and enlarged edition of her indispensable guide to the ancient Games, Judith Swaddling traces their mythological and religious origins, and describes the events, the sacred ceremony and the celebrations that were an essential part of the Olympic festival. A large, detailed model based on modern research and excavation reconstructs the site of ancient Olympia, where alongside religious and civic buildings there grew an elaborate sports complex with a stadium for 40,000 spectators, indoor and outdoor training facilities, hot and cold baths, a swimming pool and a race-course. Later chapters cover the diet and medical treatment of athletes, sponsorship, patronage, propaganda and revivals of the Games. The last additional chapter on the modern Games is written in collaboration with Stewart Binns, an expert in this field who has worked closely with the International Olympic Committee over many years."--Jacket
