This publication presents the proceedings of ICPMSE-4, the fourth international conference on Protection of Materials and Structures from the Low Earth Orbit Space Environment, held in Toronto April 23-24, 1998. The conference was hosted and organized by Integrity Testing Laboratory Inc. (ITL), and held at the University ofToronto's Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS). Twenty two industrial companies, six universities and fourteen government agencies from Canada, USA, United Kingdom, France, Israel, Russia, Ukraine and the Netherlands were represented by over 75 participants indicating increasing international co-operation in this critical arena of protection of materials in space. Twenty-seven speakers, world experts in their fields, delivered talks on a wide variety of topics on various aspects of material protection in space. Representatives from the Canadian, American, European and Israeli space agencies as well as from leading space research laboratories ofmajor aerospace industries gathered at UTIAS to discuss the latest developments in the field of material and structure protection from the harsh space environment

This pilot training project conducted during the summer of 1967 was Phase I of a two-phase training program. Phase I (ED 016 805) was conducted during the summer of 1966 and provided a group of 30 distributive education teacher-coordinators with distributive occupational experience in two business firms. The purpose of Phase II was to increase teacher effectiveness in encouraging self-exploration and developing judgement and decision-making skills in students. General approaches followed were (1) consideration of instructional content and methods appropriate to the career development of the distributive education student, and (2) group experiences designed to focus on the career and personal development of the coordinators and distributive teachers enrolled in the workshop. The instructional program was conducted within a 5-week schedule and consisted of three courses: (1) didactic instruction, 25 class hours, (2) group process, 30 class hours, and (3) integrative seminar, 35 class hours. Fiftee n graduating seniors from local schools were selected for the demonstration class. The program was evaluated through: (1) studies of behavioral and performance change during the time the teacher was enrolled in the training program, (2) the effect on the career and self-development of the participant in the demonstration class, and (3) the quality of teaching materials that were developed. Module One, Orienting Prospective Teachers to Career Education, is one of three teacher educator modules developed by Project TECE of Minnesota University. The module is intended to serve as a resource handbook for the teacher educator, and provides background on the need for career education, a brief historical overview of the movement, and a current state of the arts review.
