A message to Garcia : being a preachment by Elbert Hubbard( Book )

88 editions published between 1899 and 2011 in English and held by 817 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Originally written and published as a filler without a title by Elbert Hubbard [founder of the Roycroft artisan community] in the March 1899 issue of the magazine Philistine, which he edited. It was quickly reprinted as a pamphlet and a book, and became a well-known allusion of American popular and business culture until the middle of the 20th century. For years, "to take a message to Garcia" was a popular American slang expression for taking initiative and is still used by some members of the military. Background: the original message (carried by Lt. Andrew Rowan) was sent by President McKinley to Calixto Garcia, the leader of the Cuban rebels, asking for cooperation in fighting Spain, should war ensue. Garcia, located somewhere in the "mountain vastness" of Cuba, and on the run from the Spanish Army, was difficult to find, especially quickly, but Lt. Rowan succeeded in all aspects of his mission

"Head, Heart and Hand is published to accompany the exhibition of the same name, the first major assemblage of objects produced at the Roycroft community in upstate New York under the leadership of the charismatic Elbert Hubbard. A consummate entrepreneur, Hubbard successfully married capitalism with basic tenets of the Arts and Crafts ideology. Although clearly influenced by the work of European designers, the Roycrofters sought to personify the best aspects of American character in their work, which is strong, spare, and often surprisingly refined."--Jacket
