8 editions published between 1960 and 1999 in English and held by 422 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The field artillery's story is a dramatic one, filled with individual heroes and bumbling commanders, with gallant stands and crushing victories. Military historian, VanLoan Naisawald, a former artillery officer ... re-creates the color and excitement of these battles, using the original battle histories and following specific battalions into the very heart of combat ... In describing the different types of weapons used and explaining the army's method of handling them, Mr. Naisawald ... shows what the guns of the period could do. He traces the development of the concept of massed division attack and artillery corps battles following Gettysburg and are still being used in modern tactical warfare. Out of the grape shot and canister shells that proved so effective for Northern troops during the Civil War evolved the fighting artillery of World War I and World War II

Cannon blasts : Civil War artillery in the eastern armies by L. VanLoan Naisawald( Book )

2 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 53 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Field artillery has had a great tradition in American military history. Arming and manning the field batteries on both sides rose from this tradition, although the Union army gained an advantage using the regular army units as a basis to build upon. Based on the records, artillery did not inflict the casualties that one might expect; however, all serious Civil War buffs can recall instances when the field guns played a major role in the action."--Jacket

Immobilization, whether soon repairable or not, might result from an enemy weapons, friendly weapons, accident, mechanical failure, capture, self-destruction, bogging, or abandonment ... the present study analyzes every cause of tank casualties, based upon a sample of 12, 140 Allied tanks. 1 edition published in 1992 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

A graphic and sad story of the British anti-submarine trawler Bedfordshire and the German submarine U-558. Off Cape Lookout on a fateful night in 1942, the submarine torpedoed the Bedfordshire and killed her crew. Four of the courageous British crewmen remain buried today in an Ocracoke Island cemetery visited each tourist season by hundreds of Americans and other travelers. Over the years, the cemetery has been a special place of remembrance for coastal North Carolinians, many of whom can recall personally the dangers that lurked along the Outer Banks during World War II. This revised edition contains photographs of the Bedfordshire, members of her crew, the German submarine U-558, and the British cemetery on Ocracoke Island.--
