1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Nassariidae is a group of scavenger mollusks that is diversified on soft bottoms and rocky shores, and is the subject of numerous researches in ecology, ecotoxicology and paleontology. A weak and/or apparently continuous variation in shell characters has resulted in a confused systematics, hampering ecological and evolutionary studies. Over 1,330 nominal recent species have been established, of which 448 are currently considered valid, formerly divided in four subfamilies and nine genera. A molecular analysis based on three mitochondrial (COI, 16S, 12S) and two nuclear (28S, H3) genes was conducted using a dataset that includes 50% of the known diversity of the family. The monophyly of the Nassariidae as classically interpreted is here not confirmed, except if several genera of Buccinidae are included in the family. Results have a deep impact on the nassariid taxonomy, especially with regard to the validity of genus-level names. The validity of six subfamilies and sixteen genera is discussed. Reconstruction of ancestral character and estimation of divergence times permit to infer the evolutionary history of the clade to explain the actual geographic repartition and to identify the informative characters that might be used for operational taxonomy at various taxonomic levels. Shell characters are still useful to recognize Nassariidae species but not to define phylogenetic relationships. Fossil calibrations indicate a cretaceous origin of nassariids. An integrative taxonomy approach was also applied to discuss species delimitation based on shell characters only. Several cases of species complexes including cryptic species were detected, evidencing that many species wait to be described within the family of Nassariidae
