Visual search performance in simulated remotely piloted vehicle utilization as a function of auxiliary task loading on the observer by Richard B Huntoon( )

4 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 296 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Baseline data were obtained on how well observers could extract information from a TV monitor while performing auxiliary tasks under task loading conditions that might be encountered in use of a remotely piloted vehicle (RPV) as the sensor platform. A simulation facility was used. It contained a terrain model, a TV camera transport, hybrid computing equipment, and a television display and control console. Six pilots and six non-pilots participated in the three-phase effort. Phase A required participants to detect and recognize tank-sized targets in open and cluttered backgrounds from a simulated altitude of 2,000 feet and a simulated RPV velocity of 100 knots. Phase B required participants to monitor and correct deviations in the RPV course and altitude and to respond to two visual warning indicators. Phase B tasks were presented at two rates: one per 10 seconds and three per 10 seconds. Phase C combined the tasks of Phase A and Phase B with concurrent task demands upon the participants. Increasing the auxiliary load level decreased the probabilities and ranges of target detection and recognition. Target acquisition task demands similarly increased auxiliary task response times. Cluttered background significantly degraded target acquisition task performance, particularly when the auxiliary task was performed concurrently."--Abstract

Repair techniques for Celion/LARC-160 graphite/polyimide composite structures by J. S Jones( Book )

3 editions published in 1984 in English and held by 122 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Operational feasibility of the next generation of reusable space vehicles requires the development of a structural material system that is significantly lighter than the conventional aluminum structure presently employed on the Space Shuttle orbiter. Utilization of graphite filament reinforced polyimide matrix composite material, capable of 600 F service, can achieve this goal. The large stiffness-to-weight and strength-to-weight ratios of graphite composite in combination with the 6OO F structural capability of the polyimide matrix can reduce the total structure/TPS weight by 20-30 percent. In order for the graphite/polyimide (GR/PI) material system to be acceptable for use in advanced space transportation systems, it is necessary that manufactured components be maintained in a safe and economical manner. It is inevitable that with planned usage of OR/PI structural components, damage will occur either in the form of intrinsic flaw growth or mechanical damage. Research and development programs were initiated to develop repair processes and techniques specific to Celion/LARC-l60 OR/PI structure. The study was directed toward highly loaded and lightly loaded compression critical structures for factory type repair. Repair processes included cocure and secondary bonding techniques applied under vacuum plus positive autoclave pressure. Viable repair designs and processes were developed for flat laminates, honeycomb sandwich panels, and hat-stiffened skin-stringer panels. The repair methodology was verified through structural element compression tests at room temperature and 3l5 C (600 F)
Satellite Power Systems (SPS) laser studies by R. E Beverly( Book )

1 edition published in 1980 in English and held by 101 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The primary emphasis of this research activity was to investigate the effect of the environment on laser power transmission/reception from space to ground. Potential mitigation techniques to minimize the environment effect by a judicious choice of laser operating parameters was investigated. Using these techniques, the availability of power at selected sites was determined using statistical meteorological data for each site. v.2 (NTRL site)

Bubble Memory Module by O. D Bohning( Book )

1 edition published in 1980 in English and held by 96 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Design, fabrication and test of partially populated prototype recorder using 100 kilobit serial chips is described. Electrical interface, operating modes, and mechanical design of several module configurations are discussed. Fabrication and test of the module demonstrated the practicality of multiplexing resulting in lower power, weight, and volume. This effort resulted in the completion of a module consisting of a fully engineered printed circuit storage board populated with 5 of 8 possible cells and a wire wrapped electronics board. Interface of the module is 16 bits parallel at a maximum of 1.33 megabits per second data rate on either of two interface buses. (NTRL site)
