Mapping a city by Kunstverein Hamburg( Book )

8 editions published in 2004 in German and English and held by 149 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This publication is a selection of diverse positions on the artistic phenomenon of "mapping," generated for an extensive project in Hamburg. The city of Hamburg provided the Galerie für Landschaftskunst and the Kunstverein in Hamburg with an ideal example of an urban metropolis for a joint project entitled "Mapping a City: Hamburg Cartography." In a series of works devoted to the exploration of urban space, international artists investigated ideas about nature and landscape. In addition to serving as a basic reader on the subject of "mapping," the book presents the diverse results of their artistic and scholarly research. The American artist Bob Braine, for example, tracked down the former city fortifications and investigated the occurrence and lack of vegetation in the city with the aid of infrared aerial photographs. Following the course of an imaginary line from his apartment in Altona to Kiel, Till Krause drew a map showing visual obstacles and cell-phone reception. In his watching u, watching me project, Malte Urbschat observed security-service personnel at work. Daniel Maier-Reimer followed the course of the city border of Hamburg and photographed ambiguous in-between spaces. And the British artist Nils Norman saw the old Hanseatic city as a gigantic adventure playground

Richard Phillips by Richard Phillips( Book )

6 editions published in 2002 in German and Multiple languages and held by 120 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Images basied on the\appropriation of found images which the artist takes from magazines, the internet or other mass media. The use of existing images stored in the cultural memory of society puts Phillips into the tradition of the so-called "appropriation art" of the eighties. He also emphasizes the conceptual approach of his work with unusual combinations of different motifs within a presentational context, sometimes reflecting on a larger theme, for example aspects in the life of the American president George W. Bush. In some pictures, the artist consciously reveals the technique on which his photorealistic manner of painting is based, leaving the grid necessary for the proportional transfer of the model to the canvas exposed in some places. In his work, Richard Phillips invariably makes an issue of the blurring of the borders between advertisement, lifestyle, pornography and fashion, and thus questions their ambivalent relationships
