The poetry of John Lydgate by Alain Renoir( Book )

20 editions published between 1967 and 2020 in English and held by 897 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Originally published in 1967, The Poetry of John Lydgate presents a broad discussion of John Lydgate's secular poetry. It reassesses much of the poetry through critical examination and suggests that Lydgate was not necessarily the master that the medieval ages proclaimed him to be, nor the plain poet that he is often seen as in modern analysis. Instead, the book suggest that he was a competent poetic craftsman that presents substantial literary form in his poetry. The analysis in the book looks at Lydgate as atypical of the Middle Ages, instead exhibiting traits currently linked to the Renaissance. The book provides a unique perspective on John Lydgate as a poet and will be of interest to medievalist and literary historians alike

A Future for the Past Remarks on the State and Responsibilities of the Classics in America by Alain Renoir( Book )

2 editions published between 1973 and 1975 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Unlike modern foreign languages, but like English and Biblical Hebrew, the Graeco-Roman tradition constitutes a major component of the cultural identity of every native speaker of English, and, as such, should be a mandatory part of every American's intellectual luggage. Because of the academy's relectance to face the fact that our active environment and the demands made upon our schools are radically different from what they were a century ago, however, we have failed to place the Graeco-Roman tradition within its proper perspective and to adjust our teaching aims and methods accordingly, with the result that this indispensable part of our education is in serious danger of being totally eliminated from our schools and colleges. Teachers of Greek and Latin at all levels would do well to reassess the potential contribution of their subject matters to contemporary America and to join their colleagues from other disciplines in the implementation of interdisciplinary courses and degree programs. The Treason of the Clerks A Parable for 1970 by Alain Renoir( Book )

1 edition published in 1970 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As a teacher of English, comparative literature, and foreign languages, the author views the state of the art of foreign language instruction and suggests reforms. Discussion focuses on foreign language requirements, premises on which language study is based, tests and literature, misplaced priorities of college language departments, relevance of curriculum, institutional change, humanism and five specific recommendations. The title of this article refers to the 13th century shift in the study of the humanities to pragmatic commercial studies, a striking similarity to present educational trends, and is viewed as a betrayal of the humanists.
