Gerhard Richter : a life in painting by Dietmar Elger( Book )

28 editions published between 2002 and 2018 in 4 languages and held by 979 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Gerhard Richter is one of the most important and influential artists of the postwar era. For decades he has sought innovative ways to make painting more relevant, often through a multifaceted dialog with photography. Today Richter is most widely recognized for the photo-paintings he made during the 1960s that rely on images culled from mass media and pop culture. Always fascinated with the limits and uncertainties of representation, he has since then produced landscapes, abstractions, glass and mirro constructions, prints, sculptures, and installations. Though Richter has been known in the United States for quite some time, the highly successful retrospective of his work at the Museum of Modern Art in 2002 catapulted him to unprecedented fame. Enter noted curator Dietmar Elger, who here presents the first biography of this contemporary artist. Written with full access to Richter and his archives, this fascinating book offers unparalleled insight into his life and work. Elger explores Richter's childhood in Nazi Germany; his years as a student and mural painter in communist East Germany; his time in the West during the turbulent 1960s and '70s, when student protests, political strife, and violence tore the Federal Republic of Germany apart; and his rise to international acclaim during the 1980s and beyond. Richter has always been a difficult personality to parse, and the seemingly contradictory strands of his artistic practice have frustrated and sometimes confounded critics. But the extensive interviews on which this book is based disclose a Richter who is remarkably candid, personal, and vivid. The result is a book that will be the foundational portrait of this artist for years to come

Dadaism by Dietmar Elger( Book )

20 editions published between 2004 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 494 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A precursor to Surrealism, the Dada movement stressed the absurd and unpredictable, the illogical and chaotic, lashing out against traditional esthetics and upending artistic conventions. Emerging from the artistic and intellectual milieu of Zurich during World War I, it signaled a re-evaluation of art's cultural relevance in the shadow of industrialized war. Jean Arp, Tristan Tzara, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray were among the most famous proponents of Dada, creating works that dared viewers to expand their notions of what might be considered art. This book explains the impulses and theories that gave rise to Dada, the forerunner of conceptual art. Featured artists: Max Ernst, George Grosz, John Heartfield, Johannes Baader, Hannah Hoch, Raoul Hausmann, Kurt Schwitters, Johannes Theodor Baargeld, Hans Arp, Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Tristan Tzara, Man Ray

Abstract art by Dietmar Elger( Book )

16 editions published between 2007 and 2017 in 3 languages and held by 264 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume explores abstract art, a style that uses a visual language of form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. With roots in early Cubism and Futurism and reaching maturity in Op art and Minimalism, Abstract art encompasses all forms of non-figurative expression. The author has included an introduction with approximately 35 photographs of abstract artworks, plus a timeline of the most important events (political, cultural, scientific, etc.) that took place during the time period; and, a selection of the most important works of the epoch; each is presented with a description/interpretation of the work and brief biography of the artist as well as additional information such as a reference work, portrait of the artist, and/or citations
Gerhard Richter : writings 1961-2007 by Gerhard Richter( Book )

6 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 261 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gerhard Richter, born in Dresden in 1932, is one of the foremost painters of his generation. A great deal has been written about the remarkable heterogeneity of his work, his seemingly willful and defiant movement between abstract and figurative modes of representation, and his use of a variety of methods of applying paint to canvas. Central to his work is a strong set of values which throughout his career he has expressed in extensive notes and writings, and in provocative and memorable public declarations in which he shows himself to be the master of the paradoxical statement." "This volume makes available a comprehensive selection of Richter texts, several published for the first time. These texts come from all periods of his career: letters and interviews; public statements about specific exhibitions; private reflections drawn from personal correspondence; answers to questions posed by critics; and excerpts from journals discussing the intentions, subjects, methods and sources of his work from various periods. Complete with a comprehensive appendix, and accompanied by over a hundred photographs of artworks, works in progress, exhibition installations, and colleagues and family, this book forms a brilliantly illuminating commentary on Richter's art, as well as providing a thought-provoking discussion on the status of art and the artist in society today."--Jacket

Gerhard Richter : landscapes by Gerhard Richter( Book )

5 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 199 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

No genre has fascinated Gerhard Richter so consistently throughout his career as that of landscape. Ever since his softly overpainted Views of Corsica series of 1968-69, the artist has revisited and reprised its possibilities, creating black-and-white townscapes based on newspaper picture and amateur photographs, mountain and park scenes with heavy impasto, illusionistic seascapes in subtly gradated tones and paintings worked with abstract overpainting. Richter's approaches to landscape are various indeed, yet uniquely and recognizably his. This edition brings us up to date with the artist's enduring fondness for this subject

Gerhard Richter : images of an era by Gerhard Richter( Book )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 155 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume presents and describes 50 of the artist's works with essays by leading Richter experts. It also includes personal testimonials in previously unpublished letters as well as a conversation between Gerhard Richter and Richter expert Uwe Schneede. This book provides new insight into the complexity of Richter's imagery in which banality and evil confront one another: the dreams and aspirations of the times, fast cars and new travel possibilities; personal memories; the oppressive past; contemporary politics; and both trivial and meaningful everyday objects. The cycle 18 Oktober 1977 (1988), which deals with the death of members of the Red Army Faction ('Baader-Meinhof gang') plays an important role in our understanding of the evocative power of these pictures from the 1960s. Richter's intense preoccupation with this event concludes this group of paintings from photographs. This cycle, which was loaned to the Bucerius Kunst forum in Hamburg by the New York Museum of Modern Art, has led to a new interpretation and positioning of Richter's work
Benjamin Katz : Gerhard Richter at work by Benjamin Katz( Book )

5 editions published in 2012 in 3 languages and held by 154 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With a career spanning almost sixty years, Gerhard Richter is among the most prominent painters of the twentieth and twenty-first century, well-known for his monumental abstract and photo-realistic works. But beyond the many instantly recognizable paintings, relatively little is still known about how Richter works, his artistic processes and philosophy. For this book, Belgian photographer Benjamin Katz--a fifty-year veteran of the art world himself--had the opportunity to capture on film the notoriously camera-shy artist at work. Armed with a pair of compact Leicas, he photographed and hand-developed eighty extraordinary black-and-white portraits of Richter painting, sketching, and mulling over his work. A keen observer, Katz shoots his subjects candidly and without the use of flash. Because of this, his photographs reflect genuine moments in the lives of their subjects, often with an almost palpable sense of humor, melancholy, or love. In addition to Richter, Katz has photographed Joseph Beuys, Sigmar Polke, Rosemarie Trockel, Martin Kippenberger, and Georg Baselitz, among many other legends of the contemporary art world, exhibiting his photographs in some of the world's biggest institutions. Katz's striking photographs of Richter will be equally well-received for the insight they offer into his celebrated career."--Publisher description
