The world in Canada : diaspora, demography, and domestic politics by David Carment( )

8 editions published between 2007 and 2014 in English and held by 1,239 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Just as Canada is increasingly at home in the world, the world is increasingly finding a home in Canada. The World in Canada confronts three questions: What are the implications of the dramatic and sustained shift in the Canadian ethnic mosaic for foreign policy? In what ways do diasporas influence Canadian foreign policy? What impact will and should Canada's demographic changes have on Canadian foreign policy in the long term? In response to these questions, contributors trace changes in Canada's demographic make-up, explore the relationship between domestic politics and Canadian foreign policy across the fields of diplomacy, development, defense and security, and immigration, and determine the extent to which Quebec's sensibilities to international issues differ from those of the rest of the country. The World in Canada argues that, under certain conditions, the motivation to pursue certain policy choices arises as much from domestic considerations as from the international conditions associated with them."--pub. desc

Long night of the tankers : Hitler's war against Caribbean oil by David Jay Bercuson( )

13 editions published between 2011 and 2014 in English and held by 735 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Long Night of the Tankers presents a fresh account of a lesser-known but critical component of the Atlantic naval theatre during World War II. Using war diaries, after-action reports, and first-hand accounts, authors Bercuson and Herwig examine the story behind Operation Neuland, the German plan to interrupt vital oil supplies from reaching the United States and the United Kingdom by preventing Allied oil tankers from leaving refineries in the Caribbean. The story begins in February 1942 and follows this German attempt to scuttle the Allied war machine through to the end of the war. Told largely from the German perspective, it details the planning and execution of the Germans and the diplomatic, political, and military responses of the Allies, particularly the United States, to overcome the German effort. Winner, 2014 John Lyman Book Award for U.S. Naval History (North American Society for Oceanic History)

"Bercuson and Herwig ... recreate the dramatic days of the Washington War Conference of 1941-1942, code-named ARCADIA, using the diaries, meeting, notes, personal letters, and detailed minutes that contain day-by-day, almost hour-by-hour accounts of these historic events ... The authors take a penetrating look at the high-level meetings that lasted long into the night and at the scene behind the scenes: the social events and intrigues, Churchill's booming intrusion into the daily life of the White House, the strained relationship between Churchill and Eleanor Roosevelt, and the key role played by Roosevelt's close advisor Harry Hopkins ... [This book] is an authoritative and emotional story of two proud and accomplished statesmen struggling to overcome biases, suspicion, and hubris to create what turned out to be the war-winning alliance."--Jacket
