Marc Chagall : my life, my dream : Berlin and Paris, 1922-1940 by
Susan P Compton(
Book
)
5 editions published in 1990 in English and German and held by 502 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
While living in Berlin, then Paris, from 1922 to 1940, Chagall (1887-1985) learned the technique of etching and received lucrative commissions as a book illustrator. From the hundreds of etchings done during these two decades, Compton has paired 79 black-and-white etchings with colorful paintings and preparatory gouaches, allowing comparison of one medium with another. Rich imagery is evident in four major series of illustrations Chagall created for Gogol's Dead Souls, La Fontaine's Fables, the Old Testament, and his memoirs. Whether the themes are whimsical or solemn, fantasy merges with reality, distinguishing the works of this beguiling artist. Originally published in German, this is the catalog for a recent show in Germany. Clear plates and intelligent text add insight to an often neglected segment of Chagall's oeuvre. Recommended for general and special collections. -- Joan Levin, Indian Trails P.L., Wheeling, Ill

Stimme des Lichts - Delaunay, Apollinaire und der Orphismus(
Book
)
3 editions published in 2017 in German and French and held by 89 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

art(
Book
)
2 editions published in 2019 in German and English and held by 71 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
'Outsider Art', known as 'Art brut' in Europe, is often rooted in exceptional psychological experiences. It contains a broad spectrum of studies of plants, plant creatures, plants with souls, and even plant-animal entities. In addition to that, the plant can also be found as a metaphor and a projection surface for the psyche in art history, especially in Symbolism and Surrealism. In an interdisciplinary project involving several institutions, the plant as it currently manifests in Outsider Art will be featured in exhibitions, installations, and performance art, as well as dance and theater productions, which will contrast it with selected works from the artistic canon, shedding light on parallels in the understanding of the plant per se. At the same time, the show questions the established boundaries between Insider and Outsider Art
