The Bible on the question of homosexuality by Innocent Himbaza( )

11 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 1,918 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Bible on the Question of Homosexuality addresses the hotly debated topic of whether the Bible condemns homosexuality by a close reading of the biblical texts without taboo or prejudice, without personal or church interpretation. The authors--three Christian exegetes, two Catholic and one Protestant--are interested in discovering what the Bible says about homosexuality. They take seriously the world from which the biblical text emerges, and discuss the hermeneutical challenges raised by scripture. They deal with the full range of issues raised by homosexuality in the Bible including Jesus' own sexual orientation and his relationship with the Beloved Disciple. Their conclusions are modest though their comprehensive overview is significant. Innocent Himbaza begins the work by looking at the entire range of Old Testament texts and examining the often-cited discussions of homosexuality: Sodom and Gomorrah, the outrage at Gibeah (Judges 19), the relationship between Jonathan and David, and the relationship between Saul and David. Next Adrien Schenker addresses the question: Why did the Law of Moses forbid homosexual relations (Leviticus 18 and 20)? Schenker also examines such issues as the death penalty for those caught in homosexual relationships within the proper historical context and the significance of these Levitical passages within the perspective of biblical theology. The third and final section of the book looks at homosexuality within the New Testament. Jean-Baptiste Edart first examines the Pauline texts (1 Corinthians 6 and 1Timothy 1; Romans 1). He then examines Jesus and the healing of the centurion's slave in Luke 7, Jesus' relationship with the Beloved Disciple, Jesus' attitude toward homosexual acts, and finally the commandment of love. Though many books are available on the topic of homosexuality and the Bible, most advance a particular ideology. This book, while not a moral treatise on homosexuality, intends only to clarify, without a predetermined interpretation, what the Bible actually says on the subject."--Publisher's description
Archaeology of the books of Samuel : the entangling of the textual and literary history by Philippe Hugo( )

16 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 1,766 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The books of Samuel are a key link in the history of the biblical text in so much as they are found at a crossroad where different textual traditions encounter each other (MT, LXX, Qumran). Recent research tends to consider that the textual criticism has to take into account the literary aspects which characterise the most ancient transmission of the text. This assessment asks a variety of new exegetical questions considered in this volume: Does the comparative analysis of the textual witnesses permit proving the existence of distinct literary editions? Which are the criteria to deem the literary nature of the variants? Which ideological and theological motives governed the modifications of a previous text? Is it possible to establish a relative chronology between the putative editions? The study of the most ancient history of the text opens an archeology of the monument that are the books of Samuel. The search for their ancient foundations and the bringing to light of later modifications, the consideration both of the restorations and of the ruins of the textual edifice all throw new light on the final construct and its theological significance

Preliminary and interim report on the Hebrew Old Testament Text Project = Compte rendu préliminaire et provisoire sur le travail d'analyse textuelle de l'Ancien Testament hébreu by United Bible Societies( Book )

11 editions published between 1976 and 1979 in English and held by 171 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This preliminary and interim report of the international and interconfessional Committee of the Hebrew Old Testament Text Project, sponsored by the United Bible Societies, is both tentative and summary. It is being made available to Bible translators and scholars on a periodic basis, so as to provide a summary analysis of the continuing work of the Committee. Judgments recorded in this and subsequent reports are, however, subject to revision as the work of the Committee progresses. When the review of Old Testament textual problems is completed, a full scientific report will be published. This will consist of several volumes, in which will be presented a full list of the significant textual data, a complete discussion of the reasons which formed the basis for the decisions of the Committee, and more extensive advice to translators and exegetes concerning related problems of meaning. But in view of the urgent need to supply Bible translators with the preliminary judgments of the Committee on a wide range of textual problems (Old Testament translation committees are now at work in more than 150 languages) a summary listing of important problems, suggested solutions, and reasons for the textual decisions has been regarded as essential. - p. v of volume 1
