The fifty-three stages of the Tokaido by
Hiroshige Andō(
Book
)
14 editions published between 1960 and 1972 in English and Japanese and held by 651 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The woodblock print represents for most westerners the epitome of Japanese art. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), renowned for his work in ukiyo-e (woodblock prints), rose to fame first in Japan and later in the West with his ingenious portrayal of the famous Tokaido, the national highway connecting Tokyo with the capitol at Kyoto and the western provinces. Spotted along the way were fifty-three stations in small villages where lodgings and refreshment were available. Hiroshige named his prints after these stations. These full-color woodblock prints first made their appearance in 1834. Hiroshige showed the Tokaido in other later series, but it is in the original group, reproduced in the present volume, that the color and excitement of the road are best portrayed. Warriors, tradesmen, royal couriers, ladies of the pleasure houses--all are shown with great detail and charm. The prints showing each "stage" of the Tokaido are here presented only slightly small than their original size as produced by Hiroshige, along with a map of the entire route. Ichitaro Kondo has provided a text for each of the prints and Charles S. terry has translated the entire work into English."--Publisher's description

Kura : design and tradition of the Japanese storehouse by
Teiji Itō(
Book
)
11 editions published between 1973 and 1980 in English and held by 410 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Kura are traditional Japanese storehouses. They are durable buildings built from timber, stone or clay used to safely store valuable commodities. Kura in rural communities are normally of simpler construction and used for storing grain or rice. Those in town are more elaborate, with a structural timber frame covered in a fireproof, clay outer coating. Early religious kura were built in a "log cabin" style, while those used later to store gunpowder were constructed from stone. The author, a noted architectural historian, examines all types, from every district and age and every level of society. In capturing the essential qualities and characteristics of the traditional storehouse, this comprehensive volume presents a perceptive and elegant view of a little explored facet of Japanese culture

No surrender : my thirty-year war by
Hiroo Onoda(
)
6 editions published between 1974 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 146 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In the spring of 1974, Second Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda of the Japanese army made world headlines when he emerged from the Philippine jungle after a thirty-year ordeal. Hunted in turn by American troops, the Philippine police, hostile islanders, and successive Japanese search parties, Onoda had skillfully outmaneuvered all his pursuers, convinced that World War II was still being fought and that one day his fellow soldiers would return victorious. This account of those years is an epic tale of the will to survive that offers a rare glimpse of man's invincible spirit, resourcefulness, and ingenuit

The thirty-six views of Mount Fuji by
Hokusai Katsushika(
Book
)
4 editions published in 1966 in Japanese and held by 110 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Last year the East-West Center Press had the pleasure of publishing Hiroshige's The Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido. That volume was so well received that this year the Press presents this companion volume of forty-six prints by Hokusai. By creating the landscape print, Hokusai breathed new life into the art. He became one of the greatest innovators of that field. Hokusai and Hiroshige are ranked among Japan's gifted and certainly most popular artists, and both made their marks with sets of prints depicting the Japanese landscape. Hokusai chose Mount Fuji as his theme, and Hiroshige chose the famous Tokaido. The volumes reproducing these two beautiful sets of woodblock prints comprise the highest achievement of the art of ukiyo-e. They are available separately or as a set, handsomely boxed. The historian or student of art will find them not only valuable to own, but also a sheer delight to read." -- Publisher's description
