The land of blood and honey : the rise of modern Israel by Martin Van Creveld( Book )

4 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 649 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is a one-volume history of Israel and its people. From its Zionist beginnings at the end of the nineteenth century through the past sixty, tumultuous years, the state of Israel has been, as the author argues, "the greatest success story in the entire twentieth century." In this volume, he relates the improbable story of a nationless people who, given a hot and arid patch of land and coping with every imaginable obstacle, founded a country that is now the envy of surrounding states. While most studies on Israel focus on the political, this encompassing history weaves together the nation's economic, social, cultural and religious narratives while also offering diplomatic solutions to help Israel achieve peace. While deeply erudite on the myriad factors that have shaped the history of Israel, this book also offers an examination of the Israeli people themselves. The author considers their rich social, cultural, and religious traditions, as well as the dynamic tensions between the traditional and modern, Orthodox and secular, and even between the sexes

The sword and the olive : a critical history of the Israeli defense force by Martin Van Creveld( Book )

22 editions published between 1998 and 2008 in English and held by 624 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this book, Israeli military historian Martin van Creveld offers a history of the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). From the founding of Hashomer and guerrilla groups like Hagana and PAL-MACH, to the formation of the state of Israel, van Creveld shows how political disagreements were reflected militarily, and why it is necessary to understand the early internecine battles in order to make sense of contemporary Israeli politics. He includes the statesmen and soldiers who led Israel and fought for it--Moshe Dayan, Ariel Sharon, Golda Meir, Yitschak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Menachem Begin, and others--as well as the Arab leaders who opposed them. Van Creveld also corrects a number of famous misconceptions about the IDF--for example, that male and female soldiers are treated as equals--and reveals just how Israel may have secretly used its nuclear threat to win battles it might otherwise have lost. The sword and the olive also shows how, in 1982 in Lebanon, the Israeli Army for the first time fought a significantly weaker enemy and failed miserably. The Lebanese debacle--"Israel's Vietnam"--Was followed almost immediately by the IDF's attempt to put down the Palestinian uprising by force. Israel's troops killed over ten Arabs for every soldier they themselves lost, but as they did so their self respect disintegrated and their moral collapsed. The IDF has yet to recover and now it is beginning to realize that the greatest danger may not be from its Arab neighbors, but from within
Men, women, and war by Martin Van Creveld( Book )

Throughout history, women have been shielded from the heat of battle, their role limited to supporting the men who do the actual fighting. Now all that has changed, and for the first time females have taken their place on the front lines. But, do they actually belong there? A distinguished military historian answers the question with a vehement no, arguing women are less physically capable, more injury-prone, given more lenient conditions, and disastrous for morale and military preparedness. Groundbreaking and controversial

Air power and maneuver warfare by Martin Van Creveld( Book )

16 editions published between 1992 and 2003 in English and held by 330 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The authors identify and discuss the fundamental concepts and principles of maneuver warfare, compare and contrast it to attrition-style warfare, and trace its origins and history. They examine the role of airpower in enhancing maneuver during the early German campaigns of World War II, in Germany's 1941 Russian campaigns, and in the Soviet version of maneuver warfare in World War II. They analyze the importance of airpower in maneuver warfare employed by Israel in the 1967 and 1973 wars and by coalition forces in the Gulf War. Dr. van Creveld forecasts what the role of airpower will be in warfare during the coming years. The book includes a response to the authors by the air doctrine analysts at Air University
Wargames : from gladiators to gigabytes by Martin Van Creveld( Book )

14 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 314 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Where did wargames come from? Who participated in them, and why? How is their development related to changes in real-life warfare? Which aspects of war did they capture, which ones did they leave out, how, and why? What do they tell us about the conduct of war in the times and places where they were played? How useful are they in training and preparation for war? Why are some so much more popular than others, and how do men and women differ in their interest? Starting with the combat of David versus Goliath, passing through the gladiatorial games, tournaments, trials by battle, duels, and board games such as chess, all the way to the latest simulations and computer games, this unique book traces the subject in all its splendid richness. As it does so, it provides new and occasionally surprising insights into human nature
