Ben Heppner is the legendary Trojan hero Aeneas who escapes the doomed city of Troy and falls in love with the beautiful Queen of Carthage, Dido, sung by the radiant Lorraine Hunt Lieberson in her final appearance at the Met. Gerald Finley delivers a remarkable portrayal of Golaud, Mélisande's husband and Pelléas's half-brother, and Felicity Palmer is their mother, Geneviève. This enables the violinist to study the score and listen to an interpretation by a professional performer of the highest skills. Then the orchestra performs the complete concerto again to accompany the "solo performance."
