Vanessa by Samuel Barber( Recording )

41 editions published between 1957 and 2015 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,157 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This broadcast, recorded just two weeks after Vanessa's Met world premiere, presents the original cast in spectacular form. Eleanor Steber is marvelous as the title heroine, a beautiful woman awaiting the return of her long-lost lover. But the man who arrives is his son, Anatol (a suave Nicolai Gedda). The handsome youth plays a dangerous emotional game of wooing both Vanessa and her niece Erika (an enchanting Rosalind Elias)--with devastating consequences. Regina Resnik stars as the Old Baroness and Giorgio Tozzi is the kind Doctor. Conductor Dimitri Mitropoulos gives an impassioned reading of Barber's superb score

45 editions published between 1968 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 831 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Richard Strauss's dramatic and colorful score, based on Wilde's scandalous play, is brought to life masterfully by James Levine and the Met Orchestra. The magnetic Grace Bumbry captures every neurotic nuance of the title character, the teenage princess who becomes obsessed with the imprisoned prophet Jochanaan. When he rejects her advances, tragedy ensues. Salome's infamous final scene is among the most powerful moments in all of opera. Ragnar Ulfung and Regina Resnik portray the royal couple of Herodes and Herodias
Un ballo in maschera by Giuseppe Verdi( )

23 editions published between 1971 and 2014 in 5 languages and held by 411 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This performance features the legendary African-American contralto Marian Anderson in her history-making Met debut role of Ulrica, the fortune-teller. At first her predictions are all good news. But who would believe the best friend of the king would actually murder him? Absurd. That's what the king (Jan Peerce) thinks. But he loves Amelia (Zinka Milanov), the wife of his friend Renato (Robert Merrill). And when Renato discovers them together, he joins the plot against the king. This is Verdian passion at its best

A brilliant ensemble cast bring Strauss's beloved operetta to life, with new English dialogue by playwright Douglas Carter Beane and lyrics by Jeremy Sams (who also directed this production, first seen on New Year's Eve 2013). Christopher Maltman and Susanna Phillips are Eisenstein and Rosalinde, the married couple at the center of this lighthearted tale of love, revenge, and mistaken identities. Paulo Szot sings Falke, Eisenstein's friend, who sets the plot in motion. Anthony Roth Costanzo is Prince Orlofsky, Jane Archibald sings Adele, and Broadway star Danny Burstein is Frosch, the jailer. Adam Fischer conducts

Wagner's revolutionary score changed the world of music with its radical portrayal of an all-consuming passion that can only be fulfilled in death. The legendary Birgit Nilsson sings Isolde, one of her greatest roles, in her second Met season. Karl Liebl is Tristan, the man she loves--and the best friend of the man she is forced to marry. Jerome Hines is the sorrowful King Marke and Irene Dalis sings Isolde's stalwart companion, Brangäne

Der Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner( Recording )

21 editions published between 1953 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 94 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
