Australia's most exciting opera company, Pinchgut Opera has attracted rave reviews since making its debut with Handel's Semele in 2002. ABC Classics has been with Pinchgut all the way, releasing all five of their previous productions on CD to critical acclaim; the magic continues with Pinchgut's performance of Vivaldi's Juditha Triumphans. Enter a world of musical ecstasy with the exquisite voices of Pinchgut and the subtle beauty of rare Baroque instruments in Vivaldi's gripping tale of virtue, passion and revenge. BACKGROUND Pinchgut Opera was set up to offer Sydney audiences a different experience of opera. It presents opera in more intimate settings, where the audience is closer and more involved than is possible in a conventional opera house. The most important element in Pinchgut's productions is the music and the music's immediate impact on the audience. Pinchgut stages operas that are not regularly heard, but deserve to be Juditha Triumphans devicata Holofernis barbarie (to give it its full name) was composed by Vivaldi in 1716 for Ospedale della Pieta, the girls' orphanage in Venice where Vivaldi had been violin teacher since 1704. It was originally performed with an all-female cast and, we assume, orchestra. The libretto was by Giacomo Cassetti and was based on the apocryphal Book of Judith. As it was a biblical story, it is technically an oratorio. Perhaps Juditha is not a story full of suspense and insights into the human condition in the way that Idomeneo was. It is in its own way a moving love story and very unusual, though, in the world of opera and oratorio in presenting a very powerful female hero

Pru Marlowe isn't your ordinary animal psychic. A tough girl on the run from her own gift, Pru left the big city to return to her picturesque Berkshires hometown looking for a little peace. Too bad that her training as an animal behaviorist got her mixed up with Lily, a rescue dog, and Charles, her person. Now Charles is dead, and Lily looks good for it. After all, Lily is a pitbull, a fighting-ring dropout, and way too traumatized to give Pru a clear picture of what she has witnessed. But Pru knows something about bad girls trying to clean up, and, with a sense of justice strong enough to overcome her dislike of human society, she takes the case
