Challenger at sea : a ship that revolutionized earth science by Kenneth J Hsü( )

26 editions published between 1992 and 2016 in English and Japanese and held by 1,478 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

But the intellectual rewards of the journeys also abounded, and Hsu is the ideal writer to convey the excitement with which he and other crew scientists pursued them. The quintessential insider, he offers biographical sketches, humorous anecdotes, background information from the history of geology, and excerpts from the ship's daily operational report - all skillfully combined with a narrative history of the ship's explorations in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans and the polar seas. From a description of the much-debated drilling of a "Mohole" that would reach a mysterious realm ten kilometers below the ocean to a summary of the seafloor evidence for a meteor's having "murdered" the dinosaurs, the work provides an overview of the current state of marine geology and a source book for the history of that science
The Mediterranean was a desert : a voyage of the Glomar Challenger by Kenneth J Hsü( Book )

The great dying by Kenneth J Hsü( Book )

22 editions published between 1986 and 1997 in 6 languages and held by 779 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author uses a discussion of the extinction of the dinosaurs to argue against the basic Darwinian evolutionary theory of natural selection and in favor of a chance and catastrophe theory drawn from the philosophy of China
Pelagic sediments, on land and under the sea : proceedings of a symposium held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zürich, 25-6 September, 1973 by Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich( Book )

25 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 574 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This first IAS Special Publication contains the oral presentations from a special symposium on pelagic sediments held in Zurich in 1973. The aim of the symposium was to bring together sea-borne researchers involved with the Deep Sea Drilling Project and land-locked researchers studying ancient sediments. Physics of sedimentology : textbook and reference by Kenneth J Hsü( Book )

12 editions published between 2004 and 2011 in English and German and held by 353 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is a textbook devoted to the physics of sedimentological processes. The applicability of fundamental principles, such as Newton's Three Laws of Motion, the Law of Conservation of Energy, the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics and of other physical relations in hydraulics and groundwater hydrologyare illustratedthe discussion of natural processes which form sediments or sedimentary rocks. The author has an academic background in physics and geology, and his 40- years' experience in teaching and researchenable him to coalesce physics and geology in this enjoyable and highly readable book. In the second edition several chapters have been updated and amended. The geology of Switzerland : an introduction to Tectonic Facies by Kenneth J Hsü( Book )

10 editions published between 1994 and 1995 in English and held by 308 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Geology of Switzerland will be invaluable for anyone taking a course in plate tectonics or structural geology, and it will be a useful guide for geologists, professional or amateur, traveling in the Alps. The first twelve chapters are a translation and revision of Hsu's popular German textbook Geologie der Schweiz, while the last two formulate his facies concept and use it to discuss the classic mountain ranges of the world
South Atlantic paleoceanography( Book )

13 editions published between 1985 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 299 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Paleoceanography is the science dealing with the history of the oceans. Originally published in 1985, this book describes what had been found out during the previous decade about the past 100 million years of the history of the South Atlantic Ocean, thanks largely to drilling by Glomar Challenger during five expeditions in 1980. Palaeotemperature studies provided a history of climatic variations, geochemistry of carbon isotopes provided information on fertility of planktonic organisms and the intensity of oceanic overturns, while correlation of sediment character to changes in oceanic chemistry and fertility permitted interpretations of the variation of the level at which fossil skeletons became dissolved. All the authors were experts and most took part in the 1980 expeditions to the South Atlantic. The book brought together the results of the major discoveries into one volume. This volume was the first modern regional synthesis of ocean history, and it served as methodological model for studies of the world's other oceans
