Le Gorgias est probablement le plus violent des dialogues de Platon: on se coupe la parole, on refuse de répondre, on se met en colère, on se moque, on s'insulte et pour finir on se menace de mort et de châtiments éternels. C'est que l'enjeu est de taille: qui doit décider de l'usage légitime du logos? Le philosophe ou l'orateur? Dans le Gorgias, Platon développe un plaidoyer puissant pour faire de la philosophie la seule instance apte à décider du vrai et du juste. Ce faisant, il impose une conception de la vérité qui exclut une autre forme de discours qui rivalisait avec elle; les sophistes et autres orateurs qui avaient été dotés par Gorgias de tous les pouvoirs sont rejetés du côté d'une rhétorique réduite à une simple pratique routinière au service de la volonté de domination. Donner à lire ensemble le Gorgias de Platon et l'Éloge d'Hélène de Gorgias, c'est se replonger dans le débat toujours actuel entre la philosophie et la rhétorique: faut-il accepter, avec Platon, d'opposer volonté de savoir et volonté de pouvoir?
