Tudor school-boy life: the dialogues of Juan Luis Vives by Juan Luis Vives( Book )

300 editions published between 1539 and 2016 in 5 languages and held by 1,298 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The city of God by Augustine( Book )

67 editions published between 1570 and 1957 in 4 languages and held by 950 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Augustine presents the four essential elements of his philosophy in The City of God: the church, the state, the City of Heaven, and the City of the World. The church is divinely established and leads humankind to eternal goodness, which is God. The state adheres to the virtues of politics and of the mind, formulating a political community. Both of these societies are visible and seek to do good. Mirroring these are two invisible societies: the City of Heaven, for those predestined for salvation, and the City of the World, for those given eternal damnation. This grand design allows Augustine to elaborate his theory of justice, which he says issues from the proper and just sharing of those things necessary for life, just as God freely distributes air, water, and light. Humankind must therefore pursue the City of Heaven to maintain a proper sense of order, which in turn leads to true peace

On assistance to the poor by Juan Luis Vives( Book )

96 editions published between 1532 and 2012 in 7 languages and held by 545 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"'I wish we were able to eliminate poverty completely in this city.' Those words echo a sentiment that could have been written yesterday, but represent the feelings of Juan Luis Vives, a Spanish humanist living in Bruges in 1526. The urban problems of sixteenth-century Bruges seem very familiar to the modern reader: poverty, overcrowding, crime, the problems of the mentally ill, and the issue of the responsibility of government for the care of the poor. Published in 1526, On Assistance to the Poor was Vives's effort to bring forward these questions to the City Council of Bruges, and have them addressed by local government. His distinctive development of a single integrated system out of the several practices already in use in Northern Europe presaged the English Poor Laws of 1601 and later laws in the New World." "This edition, originally published in 1971 with an introduction, translation, and commentary by Alice Tobriner, is a valuable primary source in Renaissance social history."--Jacket

Joan Lluís Vives (Valencia, 6 de marzo de 1492-Brujas, 6 de mayo de 1540). Españ̃̃a.

"This old-spelling edition of The Instruction of a Christen Woman includes a substantial introduction that sets the book within its biographical, historical, and generic contexts and establishes its history as a printed text in eight succeeding sixteenth-century editions that reflect the social, religious, and political changes of that age."--Jacket
Juan Luis Vives against the pseudodialecticians : a humanist attack on medieval logic : The attack on the pseudialecticians and On dialectic, book III, v, vi, vii, from the causes of the corruption of the arts, with an appendix of related passages by Thomas More : the texts by Juan Luis Vives( Book )

22 editions published between 1978 and 1979 in 3 languages and held by 259 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The humanist treatises presented here are only peripheral to the history of logic, but I think historians of logic may read them with interest, if perhaps with irritation. In the early sixteenth century the humanists set about to demolish medieval logic based on syllogistic and disputation, and to replace it in the university curriculum with a 'rhetorical' logic based on the use of topics and persuasion. To a very large extent they succeeded. Although Aris totelian logic retained a vigorous life in the schools, it never again attained to the overwhelming primacy it had so long enjoyed in the northern universities. It has been the custom to take the arguments of the humanists at face value, and the word 'scholastic' has continued to have pejorative overtones. This is easy to understand, because until recently our knowledge of the high period of medieval logic has been slight, and the humanists' testimony as to its decadent state in the sixteenth century has, for the most part, been accepted uncritically. Within the past two decades important work on medieval logic has recovered the brilliant achievement of thirteenth and fourteenth century logicians, philosophers, and natural scientists. New studies are constantly appearing, and the logico-semantic system of the terminists has become fruitful territory not only for historians of logic but also for students of modern linguistics and semiotics
