Albers and Moholy-Nagy : from the Bauhaus to the new world by Josef Albers( Book )

10 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 741 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This beautifully illustrated book highlights the contrasts and correspondences in the lives and work of two of Modernism's greatest innovators, Josef Albers (1888-1976) and László Moholy-Nagy (1895-1947). Beginning in the 1930s, Albers and Moholy-Nagy each developed a rigorously abstract language that condensed art to its visual fundamentals: line, color, texture, light, and form. This language experienced a creative explosion during their Bauhaus years, when both artists moved freely between media and disciplines. Essays by leading scholars follow the artists' separate paths through to their emigration to the United States, where each continued to push tirelessly the conventions of artistic practice--Albers at Black Mountain College in North Carolina and then at Yale University, and Moholy-Nagy in Chicago at the New Bauhaus School and the Institute of Design. As highly influential teachers, Albers and Moholy-Nagy became important catalysts for the transmission of Modernist ideas from Europe to America

Alvar & Aino Aalto : design : Collection Bischofsberger by Alvar Aalto( Book )

14 editions published in 2005 in German and English and held by 268 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

New Yorker Museum of Modern Art.

George Condo : one hundred women by George Condo( Book )

7 editions published in 2005 in English and German and held by 186 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"American painter George Condo, who was born in New Hampshire in 1957, has occupied a prominent position in the Western art scene from Cologne to New York for more than twenty years. He regularly succeeds in surprising viewers with his grotesque, often tradition-conscious, and almost classically Surrealistic paintings. Condo's own models and partners in dialogue range from Goya and Velazqaez to Picasso and Warhol, in whose Factory he earned this living for a brief period in the early eighties. Along with Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Julian Schnabel, he was instrumental in the international revival of painting after 1982. This retrospective publication focuses on Condo's favorite subject: women. Featuring some fifty paintings, forty drawings, and five sculptures, the book presents a motif that appears in various forms in his art - in nudes, portraits, and art-historical collages. Apart from Picasso and Mattise, no other twentieth-century artist has dealt with this theme as intensely and imaginatively as George Condo."--Jacket
Hiroshi Sugimoto : architecture of time by Hiroshi Sugimoto( Book )

8 editions published in 2002 in English and German and held by 178 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This series of large-scale black-and-white photographs dissolves the lines between time, memory, and history in icons of modernist architecture as disparate as the United Nations Headquarters by Wallace K. Harrison, Luis Barraagan's Satellite Towers, the Saint Benedict Chapel by Peter Zumthor and Minoru Yamazaki's World Trade Center. Hiroshi Sugimoto has two recurring obsessions: history and time. He has described this new body of work as "architecture after the end of the world." Sugimoto is known for taking years to work on his series of long-exposure photographs on themes ranging from museum dioramas, movie theaters, seascapes, and historical wax figures. The new architectural images run counter to the traditional sense of a photograph as capturing a moment in time. The architectural icons in his most recent series represent the fifth major theme that Sugimoto has explored in depth. With this series Sugimoto has essentially broken all the rules of architectural photography. Photographing great landmarks of modernist architecture around the world, Sugimoto has deliberately taken the images out of focus and at unusual angles, isolating the recognizable forms. The blurred forms evoke the passage of time, muting the architectural details and leaving the essence of the building; suggestive of the way in which our memories preserve images
