Sidonia the sorceress by Wilhelm Meinhold( Book )

13 editions published between 1893 and 1926 in English and held by 137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this novel, the character of Sidonia is based upon the real-life Sidonia von Borcke, an Eastern European noblewoman from the early 17th century who was tried and convicted of witchcraft and burned at the stake. As versions of the story were passed down over the years, Sidonia was represented as more of a femme fatale character. Wilhelm Mienhold's telling of the Sidonia story, first published in German in 1848, fascinated the English Pre-Raphaelite artists and gained something of a cult following in Victorian Britain. Edward Burne-Jones depicted Sidonia in one of his paintings from 1860, and this beautiful volume, translated by Lady Wilde (Oscar Wilde's mother), was printed by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press
