The emperor's new mind : concerning computers, minds, and the laws of physics by Roger Penrose( Book )

25 editions published between 1989 and 2016 in 6 languages and held by 2,157 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Advances the theory that despite burgeoning computer technologies, there will remain facets of human thinking that cannot be emulated by a machine
The road to reality : a complete guide to the laws of the universe by Roger Penrose( Book )

12 editions published between 2004 and 2007 in English and Spanish and held by 2,125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Roger Penrose, one of the most accomplished scientists of our time, presents the only comprehensive and comprehensible account of the physics of the universe. From the very first attempts by the Greeks to grapple with the complexities of our known world to the latest application of infinity in physics, The Road to Reality carefully explores the movement of the smallest atomic particles and reaches into the vastness of intergalactic space. Here, Penrose examines the mathematical foundations of the physical universe, exposing the underlying beauty of physics and giving us one the most important works in modern science writing
Shadows of the mind : a search for the missing science of consciousness by Roger Penrose( Book )

19 editions published between 1994 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 1,327 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Of particular interest is Penrose's extensive examination of quantum mechanics, which introduces some new ideas that differ markedly from those advanced in The Emperor's New Mind, especially concerning the mysterious interface where classical and quantum physics meet. But perhaps the most interesting wrinkle in Shadows of the Mind is Penrose's excursion into microbiology, where he examines cytoskeletons and microtubules, minute substructures lying deep within the brain's neurons. (He argues that microtubules - not neurons - may indeed be the basic units of the brain, which, if nothing else, would dramatically increase the brain's computational power.) Furthermore, he contends that in consciousness some kind of global quantum state must take place across large areas of the brain, and that it is within microtubules that these collective quantum effects are most likely to reside
Cycles of time : an extraordinary new view of the universe by Roger Penrose( Book )

24 editions published between 2010 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 1,257 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A groundbreaking book providing a new take on three of cosmology's most profound questions: What, if anything, came before the Big Bang? What is the source of order in our universe? What is the universe's ultimate future? Current understanding of our universe dictates that all matter will eventually thin out to zero density, with huge black holes finally evaporating away into massless energy. Roger Penrose--one of the most innovative mathematicians of our time--turns around this predominant picture of the universe's "heat death," arguing how the expected ultimate fate of our accelerating, expanding universe can actually be reinterpreted as the "Big Bang" of a new one. Along the way to this remarkable cosmological picture, Penrose sheds new light on basic principles that underlie the behavior of our universe, describing various standard and nonstandard cosmological models, the fundamental role of the cosmic microwave background, and the key status of black holes. Intellectually thrilling and accessible, Cycles of Time is another essential guide to the universe from one of our preeminent thinkers"--Provided by publisher

Analytical and numerical approaches to mathematical relativity by J Frauendiener( Book )

6 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 165 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

La nature de l'espace et du temps by Stephen Hawking( Book )

9 editions published between 1997 and 2014 in French and held by 121 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Among others, Philip Davis offers a panoramic view of mathematics in contemporary society; Terence Tao discusses aspects of universal mathematical laws in complex systems; Ian Stewart explains how in mathematics everything arises out of nothing; Erin Maloney and Sian Beilock consider the mathematical anxiety experienced by many students and suggest effective remedies; Elie Ayache argues that exchange prices reached in open market transactions transcend the common notion of probability. Includes a foreword by esteemed mathematical physicist Roger Penrose and an introduction by the editor, Mircea Pitici.--Provided by publisher
