Organized into seven parts, this volume begins with an overview of the living organisms in the natural environment. This text then explores the ecosphere, including the element cycles and general properties of chemical compound in the ecosphere. Other parts consider the biological half life time of various chemi

A new ecology : systems perspective by Sven Erik Jørgensen( Book )

19 editions published between 2007 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 222 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The diversity of nature's flora and fauna is staggering, and it is human nature to wonder how to explain the diversity, adaptability and beauty of the world that surrounds us. How can we explain the interactions between matter and energy that lead to the abiotic and biotic web of life on earth? These questions demand increasingly accurate answers as environmental managers endeavor to meet steeper sustainability benchmarks set by political agendas. This book presents an overview of the systems-based, thermodynamic properties that underpin this natural growth and development, and explains the underlying ecosystem properties that can explain the environment's response to natural perturbations and human interventions

Towards a thermodynamic theory for ecological systems by Sven Erik Jørgensen( Book )

14 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 202 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book presents a consistent and complete ecosystem theory based on thermodynamic concepts. The first chapters are devoted to an interpretation of the first and second law of thermodynamics in ecosystem context. Then Prigogine's use of far from equilibrium thermodynamic is used on ecosystems to explain their reactions to perturbations. The introduction of the concept exergy makes it possible to give a more profound and comprehensive explanation of the ecosystem's reactions and growth-patterns. A tentative fourth law of thermodynamic is formulated and applied to facilitate these explanations. The trophic chain, the global energy and radiation balance and pattern and the reactions of ecological networks are all explained by the use of exergy. Finally, it is discussed how the presented theory can be applied more widely to explain ecological observations and rules, to assess ecosystem health and to develop ecological models
Principles of pollution abatement : pollution abatement for the 21st century by Sven Erik Jørgensen( Book )

The removal of nitrogen compounds from wastewater by B Halling-Sørensen( Book )

13 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 123 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume gives an overview of the wide spectrum of nitrogen removal processes available today. Part A gives a brief outline of nitrogen pollution sources, the global nitrogen cycle and the treatment methods; part B presents details of all biological methods for nitrogen removal; and part C describes the physico-chemical nitrogen removal methods. Design examples relating to parts B and C are given in appendices. Design equations are given in the text, but more emphasis has been placed on the profound understanding of the biological and chemical processes and the basic factors that influence these. Parameters and regression equations for a quantitive description of these factors and their influence on the key processes are presented in several tables. This feature makes the volume a very useful handbook; it will be of great value to those environmentalists who require a record of the available nitrogen removal methods from both biological and chemical viewpoints
Ecological modelling and engineering of lakes and wetlands by Sven Erik Jørgensen( Book )

11 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 54 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ecological modelling has developed rapidly in recent decades, with the focus primarily on the restoration of lakes and wetlands. Ecological Modelling and Engineering in Lakes and Wetlands presents the progress being made in modelling for a wealth of applications. It covers the older biogeochemical models still in use today, structurally dynamic models, 3D models, biophysical models, entire watershed models, and ecotoxicological models, as well as the expansion of modeling to the Arctic and Antarctic climate-zones. The book also addresses modelling the effect of climate change, including the development of ecological models for addressing storm water pond issues, which are increasingly important in urban regions where more concentrated rainfalls are a consequence of climate change. The ecological engineering topics covered in the book also emphasize the advancements being made in applying ecological engineering regimes for better environmental management of lakes and wetlands
