The grammar of ornament : a visual reference of form and colour in architecture and the decorative arts by Owen Jones( Book )

10 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 93 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

First published in 1856, The Grammar of Ornament remains a design classic. Its inspiration came from pioneering British architect and designer Owen Jones (1809--1874), who produced a comprehensive design treatise for the machine age, lavishly illustrated in vivid chromolithographic color. Jones made detailed observations of decorative arts on his travels in Europe, the Middle East, and in his native London, where he studied objects on display at the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations in 1851 and at local museums. His aim was to improve the quality of Western design by changing the habits of Victorian designers, who indiscriminately mixed elements from a wide variety of sources. Jones's resulting study is a comprehensive analysis of styles of ornamental design, presenting key examples ranging from Maori tattoos, Egyptian columns, and Greek borders to Byzantine mosaic, Indian embroidery, and Elizabethan carvings. At once splendidly Victorian and insistently modern, The Grammar of Ornament celebrates objects of beauty from across time periods and continents, and remains an indispensable sourcebook today

Owen Jones : design, ornament, architecture, and theory in an age in transition by Carol A. Hrvol Flores( Book )

2 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Owen Jones was the sort of innovative total designer in the nineteenth century that Robert Adam was in the eighteenth century and Frank Lloyd Wright was in the twentieth. Equally proficient - and prolific - in the fields of architecture, design (graphic and interior), and publishing, Jones was a passionate reformer and theorist who sought to elevate British taste through education and by improving the design and manufacture of furniture, textiles, wallpaper, carpets, and other produces. Through his efforts, he transformed thinking about architecture and the decorative arts by introducing the psychology of perception." "While Jones was well-known to the English public he served and to generations of designers in Europe and North America through his Grammar of Ornament, his extraordinary contributions were eclipsed in the record primarily because his adversaries, the most important being John Ruskin, outlived Jones and were able to promote their ideas for many years after his death. In this beautifully illustrated volume, Jones scholar Carol Flores redresses this historical imbalance and reveals Jones for the visionary designer and major theorist that he was."--Jacket
