McBryde provides a biographical sketch of the English botanist and explorer Allan Cunningham (1791-1839), who was sent to New South Wales, Australia, in 1816 to collect plants. He was a member of the 1817 expedition led by the English explorer and naval officer John Oxley (1783-1828) into the interior of New South Wales. In 1824 Cunningham surveyed the Brisbane River together with Oxley. In 1827 Cunningham discovered an area of land in present-day New South Wales which he named the Darling Downs. In 1828 he discovered a route from Brisbane to Darling Downs which he named Cunningham's Gap. He also charted the Bremer River. An illustrated portrait of Cunningham is provided.
