7 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A national study of users and non-users of public access online catalog systems (OPACs) was undertaken at 29 libraries, representing 15 computer systems, to provide data and interpretations useful to system designers and library administrators. The findings indicate that users have overwhelmingly positive responses to OPACs. Non-users have positive attitudes toward OPACs, believe they are likely to use them eventually, and that they can learn to use them quickly and easily. Problem areas identified were using and understanding codes and abbreviations, understanding terminal displays, command and control, subject searching, known-item searching, patience with response time, queuing and terminal dialog, and library support services. The most important determinant of user satisfaction was effective subject searching, followed by library support services, command and control, and known-item searching. Users recommend that library administrators make terminals highly visible, provide printers, add terminals, expand databases, and improve systems rather than provide user training. Designers are asked to consider the user interface and to enhance subject searching, incorporate circulation information, and provide brief bibliographic display formats. This extensive report includes 12 appendices, 82 tables and 12 figures. (Author/LMM)

This document outlines the methodology to be used for analyzing and reporting data collected through questionnaires at the various libraries of the University of California in April and May of 1982, as the second phase of an online public access catalog (opac) evaluation project. It is noted that the project was designed to enable systems designers and librarians to: (1) improve opac system interface features; (2) improve opac implementation and support services; and (3) extend opac services to potential users. Sections describe project objectives and scope, the data sources used in the study, the standard statistical reports to be produced, the processing and application of organization-supplied data, analysis of user and non-user questionnaires, and comparison of user and non-user data. Appendices present a sample computer catalog profile; examples of the report formats for multiple response variables, Likert-scale variables, demographic analyses, and site/group comparisons; a list of variables derived from computer system profiles; and extensive listings of variables and codes for the user questionnaire, the non-user questionnaire, and the user/non-user comparison file. Detailed Data Analysis of the Clr Online Catalog Project. a Final Report by Gary S Lawrence( Book )

1 edition published in 1984 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

In 1981 and 1982, a group of 5 organizations conducted a coordinated study of public online catalog users and nonusers in 31 research, academic, community college, public, and governmental libraries with 17 different online catalogs. It was found that: (1) the most important user characteristic linked with success and satisfaction in using online catalogs was frequent experience with the online catalog itself; (2) the kind of search being performed was also important as a determinant of success and satisfaction; (3) users adapt their search approaches to the capabilities and limitations of the online catalogs used; and (4) the form and nature of training and user assistance were important, with users who received at least some initial training and assistance showing more satisfaction and success than those who did not. This report presents a detailed data analysis of the project, covering statistical techniques employed and the findings related to users, search tasks, the online system's user interface, and the library setting. Extensive appendices provide a 25-item project bibliography, a sample user questionnaire, tables showing regression analyses for all user variables from the 4 largest academic systems (University of California, Ohio State University, Syracuse University, and Northwestern University), and bar charts with information on user variables from 13 libraries.
