The modern wing : Renzo Piano and the Art Institute of Chicago by James B Cuno( Book )

6 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 292 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume celebrates the construction of the largest expansion in the history of the Art Institute of Chicago. Designed by Renzo Piano, principal of the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, with offices in Paris and Genoa, the Modern Wing adds a bold new Modernist structure to Chicago's downtown lakefront area, directly across the street from the successful Millennium Park and its major feature, the Jay Pritzker Pavilion designed by Frank Gehry." "The story of the Modern Wing - from its commissioning in 1999, to its groundbreaking in 2005, to its dedication in May 2009 - is told in this volume by the Art Institute's president and directory, James Cuno. In addition, well-known architecture critic Paul Goldberger places the Modern Wing in the context of the Art Institute's existing buildings and its many additions through the years. Throughout this book, the many remarkable features of the Modern Wing - its galleries and grand spaces, its "flying carpet" and its enclosed garden - are celebrated in the photographs of Paul Warchol."--Jacket
Colors : architecture in detail by James McCown( Book )

16 editions published between 2004 and 2006 in English and Italian and held by 256 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Colors looks at ways in which leading architects exploit the possibilities of the chromatic spectrum. The subtle way in which black is applied to frame and organize space, the daring punctuation of red and orange, the ways in which natural materials are used and altered in unexpected ways, all suggest not just the attention of the designer but the presence of a passion for subtle gestures, that taken together form powerful spatial images. Designed by Oscar Riera Ojeda and featuring the photography of Paul Warchol, Colors chronicles recent work in residential, civic and commercial buildings. An introductory essay by James McCown places the subject of architectural color within an historical perspective."--Jacket
Spaces by James McCown( Book )

16 editions published between 2003 and 2006 in English and Italian and held by 254 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The fourth book in the Architecture in Detail series, Spaces is a pictorial exploration of interior and exterior enclosures in both the private and public realms. Details - small and large, subtle and powerful - suffuse the work presented. What emerges is a sense of the imperative of crafting spaces for human shelter, commerce, entertainment and culture. Designers at once draw on venerable architectural wisdom in arranging room layouts, while transgressing and erasing boundaries. Designed by Oscar Riera Ojeda and featuring the photography of Paul Warchol, Spaces chronicles recent work from some of the top architects and interior designers in practice today. An introductory essay by James McCown, entitled "The Enduring Room," explores how the ideas of space, ritual and sequence evolved, from the earliest periods in human history to the heroic modernist era of the early twentieth century to the present day. The dichotomy between inside and outside, public and private, sumptuous and spartan - the diverse and talented group of architects and interior designers featured herein use the three dimensions as their canvas, and in so doing continue to engage, surprise and inspire."--Jacket
Materials by Oscar Riera Ojeda( Book )

1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 177 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Materials, the first of two volumes in the series Architecture in Detail, examines a wide spectrum of architectural palettes, from traditional products used innovatively to the testing of newer substances, from elegant applications of inelegant materials to experimentation with unconventional construction practices. Each photograph demonstrates the capacity of details to be mesmerizing expressions of quality and craft through techniques of pattern, texture, color, and surface. Together, all of these characteristics ingeniously contribute to the vitality of the architecture surrounding them. Book jacket."--Jacket
Gabellini : architecture of the interior by Michael Gabellini( Book )

4 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 157 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Michael Gabellini's work emanates a serenity that belies an underlying complexity. His spaces unfold as intricately crafted, yet subtle stages for the interaction of volume, light, and materials. Initially recognized for his work for major fashion brands, Gabellini set a new aesthetic standard in retail design. Equally innovative is Gabellini's approach to the design of private residences and spaces for contemporary art, including both internationally-known galleries and special exhibitions."--Global Books in Print

"In 2008, renowned New York City-based architect George Ranalli completed a renovation (commissioned by the New York City Housing Authority in Brooklyn) to Brownsville's Saratoga Community Center - adding 3,500 square feet to the existing 1,500 square-foot facility to create a highly functional and re imagined super-block. Ranalli's facades - adorned with geometric wall planes and featuring multiple masonry units and glass-fiber-reinforced-concrete cast details, mahogany doors and windows as well as an exposed steel structure on the roof - provides a series of exquisitely designed public spaces for its diverse local users. Margaret Helfand Architects : essential architecture by Margaret Helfand( Book )

7 editions published between 1998 and 1999 in English and held by 37 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since 1981, the office of Margaret Helfand Architects has employed this guiding philosophy to produce commercial, residential, and institutional designs of arresting sensuality, logic, and simplicity. In a great variety of projects - apartments and houses, institutional buildings and commercial designs, offices and showrooms, furniture and objects - such basic materials as steel, wood, glass, and stone are subjected to a minimum of transformation, allowing their inherent colors, textures, and structural properties to shape the architecture. Helfand has extended her scrupulous process of analysis and design to this volume. Twenty buildings and projects - all illustrated with exceptional color photographs - have been rigorously analyzed according to Helfand's three essential axes of geometry, structure, and materials. Each of the works - including Kohlberg Hall for Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, the Child Development Center for Bronx Community College in New York, and industrial building in upstate New York, offices for her firm and for Time Out New York magazine, and two spectacular apartments in New York - builds on themes from previous designs and simultaneously expresses her passion for materials and techniques. Paola Antonelli's introduction places Helfand within the tradition of American modernism, tracing both European domination over the East Coast and contextual and pragmatic trends on the West Coast. Helfand's own experiences, from architecture school at the University of California at Berkeley in the midst of the countercultural era to rebuilding and then sailing a ninety-foot schooner - which introduced her to traditional and vernacular architecture around the world - were also extremely influential. The practice of Margaret Helfand Architects - individual and personal yet strongly affected by both national and international themes - thus exemplifies what Antonelli calls "the new age of modernism worldwide." -- from front flap
