In Jamaika kannte man sie schon seit der Ska-Ära, ursprünglich als Gesangsquintett, seit 1966 als Trio, bestehend aus Marley, Peter Tosh und Bunny Livingstone. Es war Blackwells Idee, aus dem Trio eine regelrechte Band zu machen, mit den Brüdern Aston <<Family Man>> Barrett (Bass) und Carlton <<Carly>> Barrett von Lee Perrys <<Upsetters>> als fester Rhythmussektion. -- Das Album wurde in Jamaika aufgenommen, aber nachträglich in England mit zwei amerikanischen Musikern (Gitarrist Wayne Perkins und Keyboarder John <<Rabbitt>> Bundrick) aufgepeppt. -- Der neue rockige Sound, zusammen mit explosiven politischen Songs wie <<Concrete Jungle>>, <<Slave Driver>> und Peter Toshs <<400 Years>>, hat dem bis dahin als blosse Tanzmusik verachteten Reggae international erstmals den verdienten Respekt verschafft - und Bob Marley zum ersten Superstar aus der Dritten Welt gemacht.
