Under ground : how creatures of mud and dirt shape our world by Yvonne Baskin( )

8 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 2,011 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Dirt - the final frontier? Yvonne Baskin leads an intriguing tour of this virtually uncharted territory, from the polar desert of Antarctica to the coastal rain forests of Canada to the vanishing wetlands of the Mississippi River basin. She introduces exotic creatures from nematode worms and mud shrimps to mycorrhizal fungi and explores how their work sustains our green and productive world above. She also explores the alarming threats that air pollution, trawl fishing, wetland destruction, and other human impacts pose to these unique creatures and how their loss, in turn, affects our own well-being."--Jacket
A plague of rats and rubbervines : the growing threat of species invasions by Yvonne Baskin( Book )

9 editions published between 2002 and 2003 in English and held by 1,163 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The human love of novelty and desire to make one place look like another, coupled with massive increases in global trade and transport, are creating a growing economic and ecological threat. The same forces that are rapidly "McDonaldizing" the world's diverse cultures are also driving us toward an era of monotonous, weedy, and uniformly impoverished landscapes. Unique plant and animal communities are slowly succumbing to the world's "rats and rubbervines"--Animals like zebra mussels and feral pigs, and plants like kudzu and water hyacinth--that, once moved into new territory, can disrupt human enterprise and well-being as well as native habitats and biodiversity. From songbird-eating snakes in Guam to cheatgrass in the Great Plains, "invasives" are wreaking havoc around the world. In A plague of rats and rubbervines, Yvonne Baskin draws on extensive research to provide an engaging and authoritative overview of the problem of harmful invasive alien species. She takes the reader on a worldwide tour of grasslands, gardens, waterways, and forests, describing the troubles caused by exotic organisms that run amok in new settings and examining how commerce and travel on an increasingly connected planet are exacerbating this oldest of human-created problems. She offers examples of potential solutions and profiles dedicated individuals worldwide who are working tirelessly to protect the places and creatures they love. While our attention is quick to focus on purposeful attempts to disrupt our lives and economies by releasing harmful biological agents, we often ignore equally serious but much more insidious threats, those that we inadvertently cause by our own seemingly harmless actions. This book takes a compelling look at this underappreciated problem and sets forth positive suggestions for what we, as consumers, can do to help
The work of nature : how the diversity of life sustains us by Yvonne Baskin( Book )

6 editions published between 1997 and 1998 in English and held by 1,094 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In The Work of Nature, noted science writer Yvonne Baskin examines the threats posed to humans by the loss of biodiversity. She summarizes and explains key findings from the ecological sciences, highlighting examples from around the world where shifts in species have affected the provision of clean air, pure water, fertile soils, lush landscapes, and stable natural communities. Distilling and bringing to life the work of the world's leading ecologists, The Work of Nature is the first book of its kind to clearly explain the practical consequences of declining biodiversity on ecosystem health and functioning

Resilience and the behavior of large scale systems( )

4 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 1,042 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Scientists and researchers concerned with the behavior of large ecosystems have focused in recent years on the concept of "resilience." Traditional perspectives held that ecological systems exist close to a steady state and resilience is the ability of the system to return rapidly to that state following perturbation. However, beginning with the work of C. S. Holling in the early 1970s, researchers began looking at conditions far from the steady state, where resilience is measured by the magnitude of disturbance that can be absorbed before the system is restructured. Resilience and the Behavior of Large-Scale Systems examines theories of resilience and change, offering readers a thorough understanding of how the properties of ecological resilience and human adaptability interact in complex, regional-scale systems. The book addresses theoretical concepts of resilience and stability in large-scale ecosystems and the empirical application of those concepts in a diverse set of cases. In addition, it discusses the practical implications of new theoretical approaches and their role in the sustainability of human-modified ecosystems. The book begins with a review of key properties of complex adaptive systems that contribute to overall resilience, including multiple equlibria, complexity, self-organization at multiple scales, and order. Following the introduction are case studies that explore the biophysical dimensions of resilience in terrestrial and aquatic systems, and evaluate the propositions presented. The book concludes with a synthesis section that revisits propositions in light of the case studies, while an appendix presents a detailed account of the relationship between return times for a disturbed system and its resilience. In addition to the editors, contributors include Stephen R. Carpenter, Carl Folke, C. S. Holling, Bengt-Owe Jansson, Donald Ludwig, Ariel Lugo, Tim R. McClanahan, Garry D. Peterson, and Brian H. Walker
