The results of a study of university/industry research interactions are presented, along with four reports on collaboration, and an annotated bibliography. The study, "Current U.s University/Industry Research Connections" (Lois S. Peters, Herbert I. Fusfeld, and others), involved on-site interviews with 66 companies and 61 public and private universities that were top-ranking research and development institutions. The focus was fields of study in the physical and life sciences, plus some social science, business, and medical education programs. Types of interactions formed four major groupings: general research support, cooperative research support, support for knowledge transfer, and technology transfer. Appendices include a geographical listing of each of 475 research interactions, including the names of the institutions, the discipline, the mechanism of interaction, and the duration. "The United States faces a critical challenge to transform our current fossil fuel based energy economy to a stable and sustainable energy economy. This transformation must be achieved in a timely manner to increase U.S. energy independence, enhance environmental stewardship and reduce energy and carbon intensity, and generate continued economic growth. In this report, the National Science Board (Board) offers key findings, recommendations to the U.S. Government, and guidance to the National Science Foundation (NSF). Collectively, these actions will initiate and sustain a transformation to a sustainable energy economy. The following six topics of key findings support and form the basis of the Board's recommendations and guidance: Finding 1: U.S. Government leadership and coordination: A comprehensive coordinated Federal strategy is required for sustainable energy initiatives. Finding 2: R & D investment: Private and Federal support for sustainable energy R & D is inadequate. Finding 3: Policy development: The U.S. energy economy is carbon-intensive and does not adequately value the environment as a public good. Finding 4: Energy education and workforce: Human capital development in the sustainable energy sector is vital. The purpose of this report is to characterize American graduate education in the 1960s and to identify many of the issues that will determine the character, magnitude, and direction of graduate education, especially in the sciences and engineering, during the next decade. In Chapter 1, Dimensions of Graduate Education, some of the salient features of institutional demography are presented, including: the number of graduate institutions, their types, locations, and transformations; the distribution of graduate enrollment; the number and types of degrees awarded; and representative projections to 1980-81. Chapter 2, Correlates of Quality, reviews a number of factors that appear to be generally associated with quality either of institutions or departments, including: magnitude of graduate program, institutional funding, baccalaureate origins of doctorates, freshman admission selectivity, selection of institution by graduate fellowship recipients, doctoral awards per faculty member and per student, faculty compensation and structure, student-faculty ratio, and minimum size. In Chapter 3, Financial Perspectives, financial patterns and trends in universities are examined. Particular emphasis is placed on the research role in graduate education, essential characteristics of academic accounting practice, and the inherent cost of graduate education in relation to higher education as a whole.
