Grammatical man : information, entropy, language, and life by Jeremy Campbell( Book )

39 editions published between 1982 and 1992 in 5 languages and held by 1,436 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Just as physics made sense out of the mysteries of earth, air, fire, and water, it can be said that the science of information enriches and unifies an amazing diversity of modern sciences, from physics and mathematics to biology and linguistics. Because symbols, messages, and codes are the stuff not only of computers and telecommunications, but also of living organisms and the forms of human knowledge, information, and thus information theory, is universal. This is the first book to tell the story of information theory, how it arose with the development of radar during World War II, and how it evolved. This thought-provoking book describes how the laws and discoveries of information theory support controversial revisions to Darwinian evolution, begin to unravel the mysteries of language, memory and dreams, and stimulate provocative ideas in psychology, philosophy, art, music, computers, and even the structure of society. The insights of information theory make us look at our world in an entirely new and different way--but perhaps its most fascinating and unexpected surprise is the suggestion that order and complexity may be as natural as disorder and disorganization.--From publisher description

Relationship of Successor Commitment and Successor Development on Ownership Transfer Processes within Family-owned Businesses in Eastern and Central Pennsylvania by Jeremy Campbell( )

in Undetermined and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Succession planning and the ownership transfer process are critical problems for family-owned businesses. Industry statistics show that almost 70% of family-owned businesses fail to successfully transition to the third generation of ownership. This failure rate impacts the US economy as a whole as numerous studies find a majority of US businesses to be family owned. The purpose of this study was to increase awareness to the vulnerabilities in the ownership transfer process and to provide strategies to overcome these vulnerabilities, focusing on successor commitment and successor development. A quantitative study was conducted. While the hypotheses were not proven, significant relationships between gender, length of service and the role of a mentor and successor commitment, as well as relationships between remaining with the family business and successor self-efficacy were found. This study advances the examination of multidimensional approaches to family business commitment and provides research on normative and continuance commitment mind-sets
