Between 1915 and 1923, over one million Armenians died, victims of a genocidal campaign. Thousands of other Armenians suffered torture, brutality, deportation. Armenia : portraits of survival and hope by Donald E Miller( )

13 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 2,355 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At times shocking and deeply emotional, Armenia: Portraits of Survival and Hope is a story of extreme suffering and hardship, a searching look at the fight for independence, and an exceptionally complex portrait of the human spirit. This book focuses on four groups of people: survivors of the earthquakes that devastated northwestern Armenia in 1988; refugees from Azerbaijan who fled Baku and Sumgait because of pogroms against them; women, children, and soldiers who were affected by the war in Nagorno-Karabakh
Global Pentecostalism : the new face of Christian social engagement by Donald E Miller( )

18 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and Korean and held by 2,097 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How and why is Christianity's center of gravity shifting to the developing world? To understand this rapidly growing phenomenon, Donald E. Miller and Tetsunao Yamamori spent four years traveling the globe conducting extensive on-the-ground research in twenty different countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe. The result is this book and accompanying DVD, which together contain the most comprehensive information available on Pentecostalism. Rich with scenes from everyday life, the book and DVD dispel many stereotypes about this religion as they build a portrait of a major new social movement. The DVD features footage of Pentecostal religious worship, testimony, and social activism, and includes interviews with Pentecostal pastors and leaders from around the world
Finding faith : the spiritual quest of the post-boomer generation by Richard W Flory( )

11 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 2,010 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Despite the masses still lining up to enter mega-churches with warehouse-like architecture, casually dressed clergy, and pop Christian music, the "Post-Boomer" generation--those ranging in age from twenty to forty--is having second thoughts. In this perceptive look at the evolving face of Christianity in contemporary culture, sociologists Richard Flory and Donald E. Miller argue that we are on the verge of another potential revolution in how Christians worship and associate with one another. Just as the formative experiences of Baby Boomers were colored by such things as the war in Vietnam, the 1960s, and a dramatic increase in their opportunities for individual expression, so Post-Boomers have grown up in less structured households with working (often divorced) parents and exposure to multiple cultures and worldviews. These childhood experiences leave them questioning institutions and craving authentic spiritual experience, rather than entertainment. Flory and Miller develop a typology that captures four current approaches to the Christian faith and argue that this generation represents a new religious orientation of "expressive communalism," in which they seek spiritual experience and fulfillment in community and through various expressive forms of spirituality, both private and public

GenX religion by Richard W Flory( Book )

7 editions published between 2000 and 2013 in English and held by 438 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"GenXers" are assumed to be a thoroughly secular and apathetic group but they actually attend church in roughly the same numbers as Baby Boomers. This book examines the myriad ways "GenXers" reinvent religion, from church services in dance clubs to sacred tattooing, Christian hardcores who worship in the mosh pit and Gothic spirituality. This book is aimed at ministers and youth group leaders, social analysts, members of the media - anyone who wants to understand Generation X, as well as sociologists and other scholars working in the fields of religion and popular culture

Spirit and power : the growth and global impact of pentecostalism( Book )

10 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 359 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Pentecostalism is the fastest growing religious movement in the world, currently estimated to have at least 500 million adherents. In the movement's early years, most Pentecostal converts lived in relative poverty, yet the rapidly shifting social ecology of Pentecostal Christians includes many middle-class individuals, as well as an increasing number of young adults attracted by the music and vibrant worship of these churches. The stereotypical view of Pentecostals as "other-worldly" and disengaged from politics and social ministry is also being challenged, as social and political change-constitute growing minorities in many countries. Spirit and Power addresses three main questions: Where is Pentecostalism growing globally? Why it is growing? What is its social and political impact? The contributors to this volume include theologians, historians, and social scientists, who bring their diverse disciplinary perspectives to bear on these empirical questions. The essays draw on extensive survey research as well as in-depth ethnographic field methods, with analyses offering diverging and sometimes competing explanations for the growth and impact of Pentecostalism around the world. -- Book cover

Moved by the spirit : Pentecostal and charismatic Christianity in the global South by Nick Street( Book )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 49 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"But if established Protestant and Catholic communities have begun to find their equilibrium after the tumult of what might eventually be considered the First global great awakening, Pentecostal and charismatic missionizing of non-Christian religious groups is sending even broader ripples through developing societies that are already in a state of flux. The cell-group strategies of renewalist "church-planters" in India, China and tribal regions of Indonesia and Brazil often disturb deeply established structures of kinship and belief - a process that exposes tensions between the values of religious freedom and social stability. The following pages explore these issues in greater depth and detail, looking frequently at how the interplay between Christian renewal movements and the particular elements of a given cultural landscape influence developments in politics, economic equality, gender relations or sexuality"--P. 9
