Vandals in the stacks? : a response to Nicholson Baker's assault on libraries by Richard J Cox( Book )

10 editions published in 2002 in English and Spanish and held by 475 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book "Double Fold" is an investigation into what its author Nicholas Baker, a novelist and essayist, terms as a deception of research libraries and their maintenance of books and newspapers, their paper collections. This book is a response to Baker's writings, based on the author's perspective as an archivist. The first chapter introduces Nicholas Baker and "Double Field" and the presumptions of its author. The second chapter is a characterization of how Baker views libraries and archives, arguing that he does not really understand these institutions or the nature of the work of the professionals who staff and run them. The next two chapters consider Baker's notion of saving everything, a perspective the author believes is fatal to the arguments the author presents. The two chapters that follow consider the idea that libraries and librarians are self-deceived in their own priorities. Chapter 7 puts Baker's arguments in a broader context, demonstrating that complaints such as made by Baker have been made before with shifts in library cataloging. Chapter 8 reviews Baker's notions of the convenience of technology. The final two chapters wrap up the author's arguments with Nicholas Baker. Includes an index. (Aef)

" ... In this work I have tried to discuss the importance of the locality to American Archival practice, the primary methods archivists have used to acquire documentation about localities, the practical basis of the archival documentation strategy as a more systematic approach to archival appraisal, and finally, to suggest a schema for conducting such documentation work. A brief concluding chapter discusses additional sources of information on archival appraisal and the documentation strategy concept."--Page vii

Managing records as evidence and information by Richard J Cox( Book )

16 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and held by 298 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For the past three decades, policies regarding a variety of information issues have emanated from federal agencies, legislative chambers, and corporate boardrooms. Records policies are critically important for records professionals to develop and use as a means of strategically managing the information and evidence found in the millions of records created daily, provided that the policies are based on comprehensible principles. This book is not a compendium of policies to be used, but rather an exploration in a more detailed fashion of the fundamental principles supporting the setting of records policies. It is a series of discourses on the fundamentals of archives and records management needing to be understood before any organization attempts to define and set any policy affecting records and information. The chapters concern defining records; how information technology plays into policy compiling; the fundamental tasks of identifying and maintaining records as critical to records and information policy; public outreach and advocacy as a key objective for such policy; and the role of educating records professionals in supporting sensible records policies. Includes an index. (Aef)
No innocent deposits : forming archives by rethinking appraisal by Richard J Cox( Book )

7 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 277 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"No Innocent Deposits, which borrows its title from a description of archives by an oral historian, suggests that archives do not just happen but are consciously shaped (and sometimes distorted) by archivists, the creators of records, and other individuals and institutions. In this series of essays, Cox offers archivists rare insight into the fundamentals of appraisal and provides historians and other users of archives with the opportunity to appreciate the collections they all too often take for granted."--Jacket

Flowers after the funeral : reflections on the post-9/11 digital age by Richard J Cox( Book )

4 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 192 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this series of four essays, Richard J. Cox explores the social and professional ramifications of 9/11 on our information landscape. "Musing," written on the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks, looks back at a year of change and commemoration. "Reacting" examines the impact of 9/11 on a department of information sciences. "Preparing" is a cogent argument for the need to rethink current disaster and contingency planning practices. "Teaching" focuses on the author's experiences developing and teaching a doctoral seminar on the role of the information professional in a post-9/11 world. Neither a cautionary tale nor personal advice, Flowers after the Funeral, in its simplicity and thoughtfulness, is certain to provide both comfort and inspiration to its readers."--Jacket
