The myth and reality of aging in America by Louis Harris and Associates( Book )

8 editions published between 1975 and 1976 in English and held by 618 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

To understand and document the image and the reality of old age and older Americans, the National Council on the Aging (ncoa) commissioned the major, in-depth survey which examined public attitudes and expectations and documented older Americans' views and personal experiences. Consisting of statistical tables, textual analysis, and subjective discussions of implications, the report presents a major overview of the survey's findings in eight sections: (1) public attitudes toward old age, (2) public expectations of people over 65, (3) social and economic contribution of people 65 and over, (4) preparation for old age, (5) the experience of being older, (6) accessibility and use of community facilities by the public 65 and over, (7) the media and the image of people 65 and over, and (8) the politics of old age. The study found that most older Americans desire to and can be productive and that many millions live at or below the poverty line. Considered extremely significant, the findings related to public policy include these: Almost all americans believe social security payments should automatically rise with living costs; most agree that the Federal government should use general tax revenues for supporting older people, and oppose mandatory retirement at a fixed age. Black aged : understanding diversity and service needs( Book )

3 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 482 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Increasingly we understand that no ethnic community is monolithic but shows a great degree of diversity in demographics, class and socio-economic status. This volume demonstrates this in its focus on the black ageing community, showing how these diversities have enormous implications for social services, social programmes and social policy. In these twelve informative, incisive essays, the state of America's black aged is assessed and policies and programmes analyzed. The authors point to the importance of gearing services to a diverse group of elderly people. They also highlight how traditional racism and economic limitations impact on service needs and uses. Finally, they note the importance of family, church and other informal support networks in the black community as a substitute for or supplement to more formally-delivered services. Written by some of the best known scholars and professionals in the field of gerontology, the essays in this book will be required reading for all those delivering services to minority aged clients

9 editions published between 1981 and 1990 in English and held by 215 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This survey was undertaken to record changes in views about aging among older people as well as younger adults. In the seven years after the benchmark study MYTH AND REALITY OF AGING, 1974 (ICPSR 7657) was conducted, a number of significant social and demographic changes occurred in American society, some profound economic trends continued, suspicions grew about an impending financial crisis in the Social Security system, and new priorities emerged at both the national and local political levels. AGING IN THE EIGHTIES updates topics from MYTH AND REALITY OF AGING with items relating to the experience of aging, social activities and the involvement of the elderly, expectations and attitudes about retirement, and preparation for retirement. Other major issues were explored for the first time, including the economics of aging and retirement, the changing face of retirement and employment after 65, Social Security and the role of government, health status, and health care
