"'Discovering Texas History' is a historiographical reference book that will be invaluable to teachers, students, and researchers of Texas history. Chapter authors are familiar names in Texas history circles--a 'who's who' of high profile historians. Conceived as a follow-up to the award winning (but increasingly dated) 'A Guide the History of Texas' (1988), 'Discovering Texas History' focuses on the major trends in the study of Texas history since 1990. In part one, topical essays address significant historical themes, from race and gender to the arts and urban history. In part two, chronological essays cover the full span of Texas historiography from the Spanish era to the modern day. In each case, the goal is to analyze and summarize the subjects that have captured the attention of professional historians so that 'Discovering Texas History' will take its place as the standard work on the history of Texas history"--
On history's trail : speeches and essays by the Texas State Historian, 2009-2012 by Light Townsend Cummins( )

5 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 220 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On History's Trail: Speeches and Essays of the Texas State Historian, 2009-2012 contains twenty-nine speeches and essays from Light Townsend Cummins's time as the State Historian of Texas, when he spoke to dozens of groups across the Lone Star State and beyond. The subjects include the settlement of Canary Islanders in Texas and Louisiana, the Red River War, Dallas sculptress Allie V. Tennant, the "hometown" of Audie Murphy, and much more. While wide-ranging in time and place, this collection emphasizes the importance of biography and the individual in Texas history, never losing the warmth and humanity that is Cummins's hallmark. The most important point of On History's Trail, though, is the most valuable lesson Cummins learned while State Historian: The history of Texas is alive and well today. There are more people reading and researching the history of the state than ever before. The range of topics in this volume shows the viability, breadth, and range of the state's remarkable history
Emily Austin of Texas, 1795-1851 by Light Townsend Cummins( Book )

2 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 214 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Austin family left an indelible mark on Texas and the expanding American nation. In this insightful biography, Light Townsend Cummins turns the historical spotlight on Emily Austin, the daughter who followed the trails of the western frontier to Texas, where she saw the burgeoning young colony erupt in revolution, establish a proud republic, and usher in the period of antebellum statehood. Emily's journey was one of remarkable personal change as the rigors of frontier life shaped her into a uniquely self-reliant southern woman, one who fulfilled the role of the plantation mistress while taking a distinct hand in ambitious public ventures. Despite her ties to influential family members, including her brother Stephen F. Austin, Emily's determined spirit allowed her to live on her own terms. In all of her notable activities, Emily principally remained a devoted daughter, sister, wife, and mother who proudly clung to her Austin roots."
Texan identities : moving beyond myth, memory, and fallacy in Texas history by Light Townsend Cummins( )

4 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 203 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What constitutes a Texas identity and how may such change over time? What myths, memories, and fallacies contribute to making a Texas identity? Are all the myths and memories that define Texas identity true or are some of them fallacious? Is there more than one Texas identity? The discussion begins with the idealized narrative and icons revolving around the Texas Revolution. The Texas Rangers in myth and memory are also explored. Other essays expand on traditional and increasingly outdated interpretations of the Anglo-American myth of Texas by considering little known roles played by women, racial minorities, and specific stereotypes such as the cattleman

Louisiana : a history( Recording )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Louisiana has a distinctive history. It has occupied a position in the mind of most Americans unlike that of any other state. Poets, novelists, songwriters, artists, historians, and essayists have found in its past a wealth of material. Many dispute the claim of Huey P. Long, Louisiana's best-known political leader, that he was "sui generis" (one of a kind), but few quarrel with the application of that term to the state. [This text] point[s] out, and with much justification, that the one-time sectional cleavage resulted from Louisiana's development of dual agricultural systems: the capital-intensive, highly commercialized sugar plantations that dominated the southern part of the state versus the domain of King Cotton in the north. The demarcation line between these began near St. Francisville on the Mississippi and then went due west.-Introd
