Le nozze di Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( Recording )
54 editions published between 1979 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 963 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Preparing for their wedding, the valet Figaro learns from the maid Susanna that their philandering employer, Count Almaviva, has designs on her. In her boudoir, the Countess laments her husband's waning love but plots to chasten him, encouraged by Figaro and Susanna. Susanna leads the Count on with promises of a rendezvous in the garden. Alone later that day, Susanna rhapsodizes on her love for Figaro, but he, overhearing, thinks she means the Count. Almaviva chases Cherubino away and sends his wife, who he thinks is Susanna, to an arbor, to which he follows. By now Figaro understands the joke and, joining the fun, makes exaggerated love to Susanna in her Countess disguise. The Count returns, seeing, or so he thinks, Figaro with his wife. Outraged, he calls everyone to witness his judgment, but now the real Countess appears and reveals the ruse. Grasping the truth at last, the Count begs her pardon

Mignon by Ambroise Thomas ( Recording )
16 editions published between 1970 and 2009 in 4 languages and held by 357 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this performance, the sensational Risë Stevens sings one of her signature roles, the shy but loving Mignon. It's a true operatic rarity, not heard at the Met since Stevens last did it in 1949, and it overflows with astonishing musical variety. The opera has at least two roles dear to the hearts of great singing actors: Mignon, and old Lothario, who turns out to be her father - here the superb Ezio Pinza in a stellar performance. Mimi Benzell is the flirtatious Philine, and James Melton is Wilhelm Meister, Mignon's true love
Werther by Jules Massenet ( Recording )
28 editions published between 1980 and 2012 in 5 languages and held by 346 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Werther is one of the iconic figures in literature, an innocent young man who feels nature deeply and loves unreservedly. In Massenet's alluring operatic version, Alfredo Kraus magnificently captures every nuance of this complex character--his aristocratic bearing and pure soul, his anguish that the only woman he can love is promised to another man, and finally the despair that leads to his suicide. Frederica von Stade sings Charlotte, the woman who returns Werther's feelings but honors her promise to someone else. Dawn Upshaw is a sparkling Sophie, Charlotte's younger sister
